;Annie,

My sister-in-law lives on Long Island, NY and has had a Koi pond for a number of years. In the beginning, she began to notice that her fish were disappearing. Finally, she caught the culprits in the Act! OSPREYS were swooping in and stealing her fish! She had put up a thin string netting over the pond to keep them out.

I had once thought about putting a pond in when we first moved into our house, but I had a friend/neighbor tell me she took her pond OUT because the local bears were eating her fish! 😲

Hi Jane! Yes, this lady I got the pond liner from said a heron had been coming in and getting her fish and she had a net installed over her newest pond. I used to keep goldfish in my biggest pond (which isn't very big!). Nothing ever bothered them, but then there was a lot of vegetation on the water. We don't *knock on wood* have bear troubles here, but we do have raccoons and I did see one of them "washing" something in my small pond once!
I am not "country" I am "landed gentry."
