I agree Thumbs up to Sue's banners. And there are several others. If I mention each by name I fear I will leave some one out and don't want to do that. You know who you are

I read that banners should be 150 by at least 1200 pixels wide, and better to shoot for 1500 x 150. Is there a maximum width?
This is why I ask:

I have a 21.5 inch monitor set at a resolution of 1920 x 1080, so part of a 1500 x 150 banner repeats. If I made a banner that is 1720 wide, it would likely look better on my screen, but I assume part(s) of it would be cut off on smaller monitors set to smaller resolutions(?). There is always the little bit cut off by the ATP logo, on the left side of the banner (the faded part). Would the rest be snipped off at the right end?

Yes, I have a small monitor, so I miss most of the right-hand edge. I can't see the ladybug in today's banner, for instance, unless I click on RobertB's photo in the banners forum.

The 1500 is the maximum width I believe.
The ATP logo pushes the banner over and then puts the logo on so only the first 1/2 of most banners are visible to most viewers.

Wow, I had futzed a little with the screen resolution on my monitor, but didn't go down that low, and hadn't realized the real impact! It really sends home Dave's advice to "Keep in mind also that the logo only covers the first little bit of the banner. So the interesting part of the banner should start pretty quick."

It's fortuitous that I happened to pose this question today. For easily comparing how a banner looks on different screen resolutions, today's banner is very useful. Though I love tree bark, that one would have been a terrible exemplification.

Click on the thumbnails below. Right click and open each in a new tab for easy comparison.

Without changing any other settings, the banner at screen resolutions of 1366 x 768, and 1024 x 800

And 800 x 600

To find what resolution your screen is, right click on the desktop background and choose "screen resolution", "active desktop", "customize desktop", "properties", "settings" or similar wording.

Angie's instructions were so perfect!!!! Thanks Angie. I tip my hat to you. Hurray! I had no trouble at when I followed her instructions. That doesn't mean I made any great banners. Hilarious! I tried but my photos lacked the clarity or the interest on the correct area. I'm learning though. I will keep trying. Each time I do some banners, I learn more what will not work which leads to learning what will work. Smiling

And earlier someone asked why their submissions awaiting approval just disappeared. That's what happens when they are not approved --- they just go poof.

I find that some photos which I think will make good banners do not while others surprise me with how good they are.

I agree So far all mine have gone "poof" but will try again another day. I think I am trying too hard right now.

Just make sure of the clarity, that the subject remains more on that left side so it maintains it as the focus when it gets pushed over by the ATP logo. It should basically meet the All Things Plants theme and as noted on the submission page "Please only upload banners from your very best, sharpest and most colorful images."

Out of focus is the #1 reason we have to reject banners. They need to be crisp!
