A new one today--this is from Grace Gardens and planted May 2. It was the largest of the five plants we received, but it was still very small. So, really happy it took off and produced four scapes!! Here is Alpine Mist, bloom and plant.

Alpine Mist-first flower ever.

Alpine Mist, entire plant. There really are four scapes on the plant, one is hidden.

We have been so busy that we can't keep up with posting this year.
True Confessions.. my mini and small flower collection has grown to more than 100 named varieties. We are crossing for mini and small flowers and probably have 300-400 seed pods on miniatures. Little Surfer Girl pollen is getting a real test this year. I am also crossing in some more hardy genetics from dormant lines.
We love the blue eyes and will be seeing lots of seedlings to evaluate.

@Ashton and Terry--Little Witching Hour is one that we ordered from Grace Gardens and it was the smallest of all. It is doing fine, much bigger now and we are hoping for scapes some day.
@Cindy, sure sorry you lost Alpine Mist--- Sad . The Roods of Grace Gardens in New York said they loved the Salter small flowered DLs, but that they didn't bloom much for them and hoped they would do better for me in our warmer climate.

Now for the big surprise--yesterday evening I was out looking around and was totally flabbergasted to discover that Everybody Loves Earnest--our new one from Tink (Michele Taylor) has two scapes. This daylily only arrived last Monday, so it was hard to believe it could already be sending up scapes. Naturally, when the flowers start blooming, you will see it first here Smiling .

Avedon, it seems the little blue ones just don't do well here. I lost Little Mucha Minto this past winter. The only 2 I have that do well are Dragon Dreams and Baby Blues.

The last time I counted, I came up with 52 E. Salter and G. Stamile daylilies that I grow. Some have very unique and pretty flowers but they don't do very well for me. They don't reliably bloom and several have very few buds when they do. I keep collecting and using them for hybridizing. I am crossing with dormant lines and my own seedlings to create better plant habits. For example, Little Blue Angel has been in my garden for 5 years. It has not increased from the 2 fans I started with. It blooms every other year. This year it had 1 scape with 3 buds. However, I have some seedlings from it that have 25-30 buds. I have some E. Salters that have not bloomed for 3 years. If garden space was a problem for me, they would have to go.
Many of them are registered as semi-evergreen but they are all evergreen in garden.
Another mini bloom...I will have to try photos of future blooms to get the true colors.

Cindy, since I am just adding these, this will be a test case for me to see how the "blues" do here. So sorry about Little Mucha Minto, it looks really nice in the photos, but I have heard it is different in people's gardens, doesn't have the color.

Lisa, I love Little Raven, Grapefruit Guts--what a name--and Little Tiki. I guess now the race is on to see whose Everybody Loves Raymond blooms first, yours or mine, we will both be winners, I'm sure.

Ashton and Terry, kind of surprised that Salters don't do well for you, guess they are geared for warmer temps. I can tell you I think your minis are fantastic, just blow me away. Keep up the wonderful hybridizing work.

Here is Salter's True Blue Heart: First Bloom Ever. Grace Gardens sent this because they weren't sure where Little Witching Hour was planted so sent along this one just in case it turned out to be Little Witching Hour.

I need to get Baby Blues. I also want Everybody Loves Earnest. Dragon Dreams is not going to bloom this year along with 20 other small and mini ones. Our daylilies are great this year. Incredible buds and blooms inspite of being hot and dry. The mini and small flowers look very good. The foliage is lush and it just does not make sense that they did not bloom this year. Most of these plants have been here for 4 or 5 years. That is my experience with them. One thing that can't be done is planning the crosses to make when half of them don't bloom.
I am confident that we will create some that perform here from our hybridizing program.
I actually already have some. They are small flowers between 3 and 4.5 inch blooms. I have not got true minis yet. I need another couple of years to work on them.

Yea, Lisa, you are the winner!! Mine isn't even close. I think it might be because ELE is planted in quite a bit of shade--may have to rethink that place and find something different this fall. Love your picture--one thing I can say about mine--there appear to be a good number of buds developing on the scapes. Oh, one more thing--I think Sweet Surrender will bloom tomorrow--for sure on Friday--will post a picture as soon as I can.
