The purpurea in the yogurt cup make me chuckle. Nice flowers, Gerris! 2 of the purpurea varieties I ordered arrived, and I just finished labeling and storing them. I'm so excited to plant them, but I want to get some hydrogen peroxide first to prepare them. I also ordered 5 more varieties since someone offered to buy me them for my birthday, but those will probably be a while until I plant them. 😊

For what reason do you use h2o2?

I read that i should the knicked seeds in a 50/50 mix of it with water for some hours until it bloats before planting to practically guarantee a sprout.

In other news, it very suddenly and very heavily started raining, so I had to run out in the rain to rescue the cuttings I planted, and in the few seconds I was out, I got completely drenched

In all my years of germinating seeds I have never used hydrogen peroxide. I guess it could control microbial growth.

What's your routine when you germinate a seed?

I'm thinking about taking a cutting from the morning glory growing in the pot with massive leaves to see if I can make an entire plant with leaves that big. Do you think I could selectively grow bigger leaves by taking a cutting of each subsequent plant that grows from them?

Beautiful! What do you have growing behind that purp? It looks interesting :smily:

I use H202 to soak Ipomoea & other large or hard seeds instead of knicking them because I have a hard time knicking seeds. But I use a way less than 50/50. I use roughly one part H202 to 10 parts water.

It's a recovering gesneriad called Primulina dryas 'Hisako'. I bought it at Philadelphia Flower Show probably over 10 years ago. It's definitely one for variegated leaf lovers.

For Ipomoea purpurea, I just the seeds in a clean yogurt cup and put enough water in just to cover the seeds. Need oxygen access. Let it sit out of the sun in a warm place and wait for them to enlarge, which is a sign that imbibation has occurred. You should see seed roots quickly. Once that happens, install in a shallow hole in your growing container no deeper than say 1/4". You should see cotyledons in less than a week.

I almost lost it due to overwatering it. Fortunately the last leaves struck roots and I am now a happy camper.

I found Ipomoea setifera seeds!! It was rainy today, so they're moist, but I'll check again in a few days when it's dry and there should be more since I only picked a couple. Also, the Distimake tuberosus began to produce flowers too, so I'll snap a pic of that when the weather is nicer.

Do they look ripe? Seed color should not be on the green side.

OMG wanna trade? Haha I am serious - collect a pile of seeds. If you like Ipomoea purpurea I have a number of cultivars you might like to grow.

I would love to trade for purpurea! The seeds are ripe and black. The seed pod looked like a small chestnut and i just rolled them between my hands to separate them, it's pretty fun. I only picked the ones that were ready, and I separated the perfect seeds from ones that were damaged, probably from being wet when I oppened them. I'll go again on a dry day to get some seeds that are dried on their own- a whole handful! They're slightly smaller than ipomoea alba moonflower seeds.

Holy moly, I love it! What a discovery you made. I'm so excited! See what growing morning glories does to you? Hahaha

I used to have Ipomoea setosa and it froze out one fall before I could bring it in (was away on a business trip). I'd love to have that species growing again in my little garden.

That's great, and I share your excitement!
Setosa looks very similar to setifera, but the leaves are different. The stems and flowers look identical, but the leaves are very different. It's very pretty.

Some things I've done the past few days but haven't recorded yet. I tried scoring and soaking some seeds to to figure things out as my first time doing it, and I put those in some cups.
I took a cutting of the massive leaved morning glory to see if I can produce a plant with all the leaves that large. Kt is currently in a cup of water.
I found some moss and felt like playing with that, so I put some in a small cup with some soil as well in a dim place.

I found I rarely have to score purpurea seeds.

Moss would look pretty on a container but does it like open sun? PR sun was kinda brutal from what I gather.
