yes they do Lucy. They create them, name them, photograph them and put them in catalogs and on line and you can buy 'named' unregistered bearded irises. Some of them are quite lovely. The problem is that they will have to be considered NoID's. I have never bought any but I have been curious enough to look up the names of some of this hybridizers creations. After he has sold his irises under his chosen name several have been registered using the names he has chosen for his irises. People assume that because the irises are cataloged and sold by a vendor, and who are not aware that irises must be registered to be officially named, will forever be calling their iris by the name given to a registered iris. I have heard people say 'I know my irises name is so-and-so because I bought mine from the ...... iris farm'.

There are a dozen or more seedlings shown on the thread that I would be delighted to have in my garden, but I keep thinking about this one. Of all the beauties posted here, Kent, if you were ever going to register and introduce one, I'd promote it first. Lovey dubby

It's a neat color, I'll say that for it. Smiling I think it needs to be watched for a few years, though. For a maiden bloom, it had pretty nice branching and bud count. Seems to grow well, too, and you can see the the form, substance, and color. But, a couple of its siblings had real problems in the standards and I want to make sure it doesn't share those traits before deciding what to do with it. Shrug!

Speaking of interesting colors. I generally don't care for brownish flowers, but these two siblings were interesting enough to keep. Don't know quite what to think of them? Thought about tossing them because, eh brown, but couldn't quite do it.

I did fall in love with their light blue sister.

My daughter wants me to name a light blue iris after her and the above is definitely in the running.

She preferred this one (from a different cross):

Even within the second cross, I preferred the seedling below. Blinking We'll have to work it out over the next few years, somehow. Smiling

Oh, lovely Kent! The second brown iris is a great one and even if it is not your particular favorite color flower there is a big market for brown irises. And, I like the last blue posted. It seems fuller than its sibling and I just like blue ones. Great irises! How will you ever choose?

I really like the first brown, not too keen on the second.
Agree with Bonnie on favorite blue. It feels just a hair more expansive and exuberant than the other two, although the others are as pretty in color.

I think all 5 are keepers and should be given a chance. I really like all of them, but the last one steals the show!

I am with Arlyn on the two brown ones. At the very least you should keep and use them as parents. All of the blues need to be kicked to the curb. Nothing about them was distinctive enough to introduce. Yes, they are nice (lovely) but there are soooooo many of them in the market place already.

Absolutely love the brown ones.

I have a perennial nursery if you ever want to trade some of your new ones, and of course, siberian irises.

I think we're pushing you too much to sell or trade, so just ignore the above, LOL.

I prefer the first brown & first blue-white, just because that one is more distinctive. 2nd is lovely, but a lot of blues out there. Keep it for hybridizing if it has more good points than just a lovely flower.

I agree with everyone about keeping the browns. I love the first one, but the second is no slouche.
