They do love being cold, but that is also their dormant time. I think it is a combination of cold and short daylight hours.

It is comfy weather wise here during daytime, I wonder if these semps want more watering now...being so water deprived already since mid Dec. Will experiment and see...

Terev, I am doing the same experiment now. Mine are waking it seems and are VERY thirsty. I set up different experimental camps. The ones that I have followed the advice of northern folks(thanks by the way) look awful and have shrank but still seem to be asleep. They are all closed up. The ones that were planted in straight up horse manure and getting more water are surprisingly doing the best. I will get some before and after pics together to show. I worry about those ones that seemingly have broken dormancy early. It has been record breaking high temps the last few weeks. I am not sure of the better route for my climate. We did get a lot of early freezes here, so I hope that is enough for their dormant period. Even my natives are confused about the spring like weather. I have stuff coming up that should be at least two months from now. Half the nation shuts down air flight and we had a record breaking 80 degrees?

I guess we are on similar hi-low temp swings. Rolling my eyes.

Am still trying to get to know the semps..some really hate our summer heat, so I end up putting up shade on them....I know my semp arachs really hated the heat, but same ones are happy right now, well, I have located them in a bit more shady side. I do know they bolt big time when too much heat comes in. I was really hoping this cooler temps with dense fog mornings will help them come along. Some are slowly making offsets or making their summer offsets more mature now..who knows...will observe how it goes.

I'm watching both of your experiments. It will be interesting to see what works in both CA and TX type conditions.

Tarev, I plan on putting mine in the shade this summer. I talked to a man in home depot one day and he used to have a nursery in Cali. He said it is possible for them to thrive in these conditions but shade is important in the heat. So far the ones I water more have grown more roots and are nice and plump. I got all mine as babies and most did not have any roots yet. The deeper containeurs are also responding better than the shallow ones. I planted up a lot of shallow containers when I first got them in Novemuber and I can already tell that those containers will need to be remade into larger ones to control the temp swings better.

Lynn, I sure do hope this time next year we can both say woohoo, it can be done!!! Hurray!

I gave mine a spray from the hose today-- those that are in containers up against the foundation under the eaves. It seemed like they were getting dry.

I moved a few of mine off of the covered deck, so they would get the rain. The rest I have been watering once in awhile since December. They all seem to be doing alright so far.

I set my containers of Orostachys out yesterday but it never rained so I pulled them back under the eaves. When it still hadn't rained this morning I included them with my semps for a drink. Of course it rained since Smiling . I don't like leaving them out overnight when I can't monitor them. With my luck that is when I would get a downpour!
