gardenglory said:I was over at the LA today myself. I must say, they are practically giving away plants that were a hefty three figures last year. There is alot of stuff I bought in October, that is much cheaper now, and from the same sellers. I wont make that mistake next year, unless its just a must must must have. I really dont like buying so far in advance anyway, likely is I will have changed my mind three times. This year I did, A treat for a tough year. I dont regret it, but this year Ill try to have my therapy at the fabric store Big Grin

I agree I bought several daylilies from Tink3472 on the lily auction that were 2014 introductions, and I bought them for 10-20 dollars each. They were nice cultivars that were selling for at least 100 dollars last spring.

I got:

WISE WHISKERS (Lambertson 2014) SF plus increase $16.00
SOUND BITE (Trimmer 2014) SF plus increase $11.00
PUMPKIN PARK (Trimmer 2014) SF plus increase $18.50
MERMAID PARADE (Trimmer 2014) SF plus increase $16.08
DIXIELAND DELIGHT (Trimmer2014) SF plus increase $10.00
MUNCHY CRUNCHY (Lambertson 2014) SF plus increase $15.00
LIKE A DREAM (Devito 2013 fall) SF plus increase $15.00

I received my order from the Trimmers at Water Mill Garden today -- huge fans, and all are double fans except one that is a single, and TET CHRISTMAS IN OZ has 4 fans.

Larry, unfortunately almost all my daylilies are in pots on tables so I can use them for hybridizing and move them around to get them out of our heat after pollinating.

Well, made of mess of my mix, I got cheap and left some old stuff in with the new and its just not draining well. My new additions from the Lambertsons will just have to soak another day while I start from scratch on the mix. I was wondering way my Maryott order was looking so bad. I dug them up...so to speak, and the roots where all growing on top Grumbling Thank goodness for pine fines, Everyone will have some new mix by this afternoon, well at least the new arrivals and Maryotts.

My Lambertsons plants look great, one a bit small, but in the description, it says makes small fans.

I got my Lambertsons order yesterday too -- couldn't believe it when that little post office truck pulled up for the second time just before 5:00 with that second box. And it's another great order -- only one single fan in the bunch, and that's HAPPY TEETH -- which they had said in the description is in very short supply. So now I have a bunch of planting to do...

Edit: Oops, I got confused -- the single fan in my Lambertsons order is WACKY, and HAPPY TEETH is the single fan in my Trimmer order...

That's a lesson it seems everyone has to learn the hard (or laborious) way! Sorry for the work but at least you caught it all now before any real damage happened. I had really good luck with ProMix BX as a growing medium straight out of the bale but I have found that it has a very bad tendency to contract/compact as it dries. I can't recall off the top of my head how much peat is in that mix but I am fairly certain that is the culprit. As it is, I find that I can get a good growing season out of it but that second year is just asking for trouble.

I hope Im mixing the right amounts of things, I guess there will be a bit of a learning curve with the amendments, but I think Ive got the drainage covered. Well, maybe or maybe not, my worry now is they drain to fast, and wont soak up nutrients.

I recieved my order from Greg Goff last Wed. Very nice fans and a nice bonus as well. It was 75 degrees and overcast that day. Glad to finally get a chance to dig in the dirt a bit. I am expecting orders from Mary Gaskins and Fred Manning this week.
The Peach trees and Bradford Pears appear to be only a few days away from blooming. This and the fact that my allergies are starting up tell me that Spring is on the way.
Wish I could bundle some of these temps up and send them up to you all in the northern climates.
Oh almost forgot. 'Sweet Goldini' and 'Greater Good' were two DL from Greg.

Just received my very FIRST daylily order and I have all of you to blame, whoops! to thank for the inspiration! Lovey dubby I ordered from Amador Farms, the prices were good for me and they are recommended. I did buy two last year (NOIDs) from HD or L's? in a one gallon pot. (They are already up with many leaves so I'm looking forward to the blooms.) The fans I received today are very nice and there were two of each and I'm very happy with their service. I made a special bed for the new arrivals and was going to use native soil and alfalfa pellets but I'm wondering now if that is a good idea as I have read so many soil recipes in the forums. Our soil is clayish and I have been adding sand and straw with compost to the beds I have other flowers in already. Also there is no local source for pine bark although cedar bark is very plentiful and I usually use it to help keep the soil cooler in the summer. Is that ok? (Maybe this is not the correct forum to ask these questions, if not, please point me in the right direction.)

I think unless you are going to grow daylilies commercially you will be fine with native soil and alfalfa pellets. As the years go by you can continue to improve your soil. Daylilies are not normally all that fussy, and will normally do well in native soil if is halfway decent.
I am expecting in two small orders and I was so excited to be out prepping the beds, I made up my labels dug in compost and added a little fertilizer, now just waiting on the plants.

Pat, I use cedar bark for mulch with my Daylilies and it has worked fine.

Larry, how do you keep your plants from pulling down in those big holes. Im getting so tired of having to pull plants back up every year and shore them up underneath.
