Nice benches, Lindsay. May I suggest you ask your handyman to install some sort of tie-down for them so they won't blow around should we get a storm with strong winds? (even regular thunderstorms can gust to 40mph) There are 'hurricane anchors' available for about $8 at the hardware store that you basically 'screw' into the soil, or you can have him drill a ring into your concrete. (patio furniture is light, and you could move it yourself into shelter, but those big benches are too heavy to move.)
Melissa, that orchid is just stunning. Love the hieroglyphics on the petals, and the color sure fits the name.

I wish it was mine, but it belongs to our local Phal expert Marcus Valentine. He is extremely generous though. He gave me 3 very nice regular Phal hieroglyphica that he bred. One is heterozygous for the alba variation. He told me to self it and it will guarantee 25% alba offspring. I am going to do that as soon as the rest of the blooms open. He offered to do all of the hard work and we can share the seedlings. He also gave me an extremely rare Phalaenopsis violacea var alba. I'm just hoping I can get it to bloom. They are very finicky.
The nice thing about hieroglyphica is that it blooms fast on young plants. You don't have to wait until you are old and grey to get a bloom from a baby!
Here is a cute little bloom, Pelatantheria insectifera.
This one always starts up when I bring my Orchids inside in the Fall, more little bugs to follow!
Bc Binosa 'Tetraploid' has so far 3 spikes to open this season
And there is the Caulocattleya Paul Vondersaar
And some better pics of the Ceratostylis retisquama/ rubra.
Oooo, I like that Pelatantheria! What a cutie! I find it quite interesting...The different color 'lips'. Ursula, is that a common occurrence in this plant?
Tara, different shades on the lip on this one are caused by age of bloom and different angles taking these pictures. I tried to avoid shadows running over them. In general they are the same.
I am trying to rebuild my orchid wish list...and the one I had from years ago..has vanished into thin air! One of you had a beautiful pink Cat. with dark pink spots..and for some reason Penny something or other is sticking in my memory...Was it yours , Ursula?
Yes, it must be C. Penny Kuroda. I got mine some years ago from Waldor Orchids, Linwood NJ. It always blooms in July for me and the blooms smell heavenly. Pics from July 26 this Summer
Yes! that's it... C. Penny Kuroda thanks Jim & Ursula!
I'm going to Miami tomorrow to pick up my plants from my sister, Candace ...the foster mom...
she advises me that there are several orchid shopping opportunities in Homestead..just a few minutes
from her house...if I have ANY room in my MINI Cooper...I'll be filling it with things from the wish list!
