Tell me about the care home. is that like our nursing home? or do you mean a senior residential home where the "guests" ( independent ) have their own bed, galley kitchen and bath?
Does Canada help pay for either?
Are these nice places to live ? Some nursing homes here are not nice and others are super.
Usually the assets of the guest are spent down and then the nursing home will accept SS check plus Medicaid underwrites. This is usually with the "nursing " home -- -a residential facility where the guests need caregiver help to eat, bathe, etc. Nurses give medications.
My mom lived independently....paid her own bills....had a group bus take her to doctor and shopping at grocery store once a week. Card games..a communal parlor ( although it was a multi-story apartment building. There was a pool. Crafts.. She did not participate. She said the people were too old.
She said the women were all after the three men " with a heartbeat" on her floor. There was a " beauty" shop..she would not go there either. As dementia took over..she went (kicking) to a hell hole nursing home..we removed her from there ( smelled..served gruel...assistants questionable..stole.. medications all messed up, all her clothes disappeared ) to one that was very clean..well run..food looked like food. Mom was miserable in both ( all three really) Once we joined mom in the "dining room" ..she was wheel chair bound because she wandered. A bell would go off if she stood up..she hated it. This clearly demented woman kept yelling for ( we assumed ) her husband..." Harry..Harry..Harry" My mom was getting more and more worked up...finally ( with an EVIL look in her eye) she yelled.." AH, SHADDUP!! HARRY IS DEAD AND IF YOU DON'T KEEP QUIET ...YOU WILL BE TOO! "
we broght her a birthday cake once and she INSISTED we not give any to thst same sweet woman. We did of course and mom refused to speak with us. She was something else.
