Well I picked up the pavers in an are about three feet wide.
It had dropped about two inches in the middle.
I jumped on it to see if it dropped more and it did not so I am thinking it had dropped some time in the past but the stone were so tight it was not until I stepped dead center on the middle one that it really dropped.
I can see now that the tension is off where there are other that dropped towards the sidewalk, that is raising with frost .
I had used locking paver sand to fill in the gap between the pavers so you cannot just take them out and simply slide them back in.
I put dry sand, best is in the tubes used for additional weight , for traction, in winter, and filled the depression but as the area is not no longer level flat and I have to tamp down the bricks I may or may not relay again before putting sealing sand in the cracks between the bricks.

I was a bit worried about jumping on it as twenty years ago I found a cement slab, maybe a little over a foot across, on the edge of the garden with a iron pipe hole in the middle.
I tried ramming a rod down the hole but it only went in about one foot, so I forgot about it.
Two weeks later where the cement had been was the center of a hole ten fee deep and eight feet wide.

This house is one of a very few that survived a tornado in the eighteen hundreds and once was the judges house and where he held court.
It has room that is now a renters bed-room but was once a horse carriage and then Model-T garage.
When it rains, water goes under it and disappers.
When it rains hard it actually washed the white two inch rocks that hide its base (no foundation sits on cement slabs on the corners, the floor is not level.) I have rocked the one area three times already .
I am hoping that that wash is not connected to the dropping pavers on the opposite side as that would mean there is an under ground pathway.

Me too! Do they get sinkholes in MN? I thought that was a FL thing. ?????

I love it and still use Vicks when I am sick. Sometimes the old remedies are the best.

RpR said:I put a large paver stone sidewalk patio around two sides of the house approx. ten or so years ago.
I was cleaning it so I could put glossy paver solution on it as I do every year. (Never, never use the water based stuff, it does not look as good and unlike the chemical based stuff does not kill prevent weeds)
I stepped on one part closer to the house and my foot went down a fractions of an inch, I stepped on it again and one brick went down over an inch and others around it sagged.

As I have been walking in that area, with or without pavers, for thirty years I dread what I may have to do to fix it.
Out by a shed I put there fifteen years ago a small paver pad in front of the door is also caving but I know there used to be a tree there as it did that, to a lessor degree, five years ago.

What's the reason for the ground to sink like this?

Not the kind that swallow houses, though smaller ones have hit in the twin cities , they have Sandstone caves along the river.
Two boys died awhile back when one caved in on them.

This area is known for granite quarries but this was an area with a lot of dug out and artesian wells and large outhouses. More than a few people have said they have had the unknown remnant of both cave in and some times the hole is not small.
I am hoping and some what confident that it is a long dead Elm tree rotting out as when I first came here there were seven trees on the lot and six of them were elms or remains of one.
The hole by the out shed is probably just the Elm tree that was once there.

When I put in the paver stones patio, as one side bordered a steep hill, I put in deep base on the edge, class two granite at least eighteen inches deep and while digging down brought up old fire scared bricks, bottles and other garbage.
Maybe it was another dumping hole.

I thought my sore shoulder was getting better, but had a relapse, now it's painful again. Yesterday I found out our bottled water was left down by the street because the plumber's truck was blocking the driveway. So...shall I try to get the 5-gallon bottles up a long steep gravel driveway by myself or just call the company to tell them that my husband is completely disabled and I have a bad back and an injured shoulder and they should come back to at least get the bottles up to our deck? All I can say (and this probably has a lot of truth in it) is that I probably got better much faster using Vicks than if Momma hadn't smeared it under my nose and on my chest. The very fact that I would have done and said almost anything to indicate that I was better, just shortened the time I had to use it. Whistling
