Dangerous Ken...back then ( not that you are that old Whistling )

Studies showed that that smear under the nose and at the entrance of the nares carried a risk of inhaling aerosolized oil..

Chemical coat in the lung that never gets washed out. Not bad I guess for episodic..but some are addicted to it and developed chemical pneumonitis.

That is why they did away with that Vicks up the nose with the holes contraption. Now a days I thing it is all water soluble.

My mom rubbed our chest with it and then put an old wash rag on the chest..I loved it.
I tucked a Vicks-laden cloth under the top sleeve of an old pillowcase for the kids.

That's the Vicks inhaler - they're still available, and we use it. It works well, and even for when I have an allergic reaction. Better than the alternative of not being able to breath Whistling

They are available with regard to the dispenser but not the formulation. Well...I don't know about Canada...but I feel sure....

I'm with you Ken, I do love that warm fuzzy feeling and good sleeping that comes with Nyquil. I rarely get a cold, it's probably been 10 or 15 years now. If I can't sleep though, I have been known to take small hit off that bottle of Nyquil.

I always had Vicks rubbed under my nose and on my chest when I was sick as a kid. My father used to basically eat the stuff, he put it in his mouth and said it cleared his nose. I love the smell and still use it fairly often. One of the lesser uses of Vicks is most cops keep one of those tiny cans in their pocket or their car. If there is a bad smell, anything from old drunks who pooped themselves to a dead body, then a little Vicks under your nose will keep you from heaving and embarrassing yourself. I used to get bronchitis as a kid and remember the hot plate with a pan of water and Vicks in it put by my bed with a towel over my head so I was surrounded by the fumes.

It may be a case of which came first...the bronchitis or the treatment.

Acute "pneumonia" from a chemical acts like bronchitis.

I knew many many MANY people that had a Vicks habit.
One was a colleague who told me she absolutely could not do without it.
I liked it too but never had that much exposure to it except the rare cold ..I just did not get viruses like my siblings.

Well, anyway, it is water soluble now.

I never had the pleasure of trying. Nyquil..can't take antihistamine. But I bet Benadryl is cheaper. ..then when we scale up to the OTC weight loss pills ..that antihistamine REALLY gets expensive, the charge seems to be reflected by what the medication is marketed as but it is frequently the same active ingredient. I met a 30 ish gal once -- had terrible pulmonary hypertension..docs were really perplexed..turns out she was using a sleep aid, taking OTC antihistamine for her significant seasonal allergies and an OTC preparation to help her lose weight/ suppress appetite. All that antihistamine created havoc with her pulmonary vasculature.

You are probably right, those were days when a lot of 'home remedies' were the norm. I'm 70yo so when I was a kid there were a lot of things done that no one would do now.

I would report you to the politically correct police but then I would have to stop.

I have allergies but generally avoid taking pills for it but last year I bought some off brand from Sam's Club.
This year I decided to try them as they are good for 24 hrs.

I am not sure if they really work as I do not get a stuffed nose like some do and as summer goes on and I get used to heat and allergies the faucet on my nose slowly closes but I did find out, after some experimentation, that this brand while it may do what is says for 24hrs., for me, when it wears off gives me a nasty headache I end up popping large doses of pain killer to reduce.

When it is gone, no more for me.

(inside ) and then turn them upside down on our backs ..think glass porcupine ...

And he used leeches too!!

I put a large paver stone sidewalk patio around two sides of the house approx. ten or so years ago.

I was cleaning it so I could put glossy paver solution on it as I do every year. (Never, never use the water based stuff, it does not look as good and unlike the chemical based stuff does not kill prevent weeds)

I stepped on one part closer to the house and my foot went down a fractions of an inch, I stepped on it again and one brick went down over an inch and others around it sagged.

As I have been walking in that area, with or without pavers, for thirty years I dread what I may have to do to fix it.
Out by a shed I put there fifteen years ago a small paver pad in front of the door is also caving but I know there used to be a tree there as it did that, to a lessor degree, five years ago.

I LOVE the smell of Vicks. I still use it for a sore throat. Just slather a bunch on my neck, tie a handkerchief around, and if I can, I'll even lay the heating pad on for a bit.

No wonder you moved south! Whistling

I took Claritin every day of my life for 15-20 years. Every...........single...........day. I finally decided to see how I did with my (outside) allergies without anything. I haven't taken a pill in almost a year and cannot tell the difference.

Y'all, with your Vicks' love are driving me to drink. I never have anything to drink before 6:00 (unless special occasions) but I might have to make me a "stiff" one at 5:00. Memories of that Vicks smell are giving me the hemi-jeemies. nodding
