Holly that is so beautiful, it looks like a miniature retreat. You did an awesome job in your decorating and planting. Thumbs up
Last year I did what Jacki is talking about in digging up the clump. I ended up with so many plants I ran out of new homes for them to go to. Rolling on the floor laughing Still have some Sedum Autumn Joy in pots. Whistling

Here is a close up pic of that planting. The sedums are getting ready to start blooming these guys are 3ft tall.
Bluefox, Luckly we don't often need to close the screens. Mostly they are just tied back and I like the soft look they give the Gazebo.
Lynn, It really is a retreat. You wouldn't believe the difference having that to sit under. There is a hummer feeder hanging from the shepherds crook in that planting and I can sit there and watch the hummers and other birds coming into the feeders. It's a great place to sit and watch the Grands play in the pool.

Holly, that is just beautiful! I can imagine how relaxing it is. I envy your lack of mosquitoes too.

Jackie, never would have thought of that way of producing more upright sedum either. Another "trick" I'll have to try. Wow, I learn so much here! Thumbs up

Chris, just make sure you have a lot of places to plant the babies, or lots of friends to give them to - you can increase your stock big time! Don't forget, you can also use the new growth from these divisions to get some really quick cuttings too. They root within a week or two.

Is there a particular time of the growing season to do this. If I try it now should I cut off the flower heads that are forming?

Are you referring to doing cuttings or splitting up the clump? For cuttings you can make several out of the tall stalks, and yes, cut the flower head off. For the division technique, you probably could leave the flower on, but why would you? What you'll end up with is a lone stalk with a heavy flower on top which might topple the whole thing into the dirt. I usually chop off any excess growth as then the roots don't have as much work to do making more. I'm brutal, I know!
I can take some pics if you work better visually - let me know.

Hi Suzanne. We need to get this thread going again. Thanks for posting to it. : )

Newyorkrita are you out there? How are those upright sedum of your doing?

Here is a photo of my Sedum 'Autumn Joy' for last year. None are blooming yet this year. I love them growing with the asters. As you can see the Bumble Bees love them to.

Seeing photos from other people is what gets me back out in the yard. It is inspiring to me to see what others are doing with their plants.

The trouble is that it is too early so the sedum are not blooming yet. Lots of bloom to come!

Lynn, They sure look nice blooming with those Asters. Thumbs up

I had these terrible floppy sedums so I decided to just cut them off. Nothing but about 6 inch of stem left. They are growing in great. Probably won't flower but that is OK.
