Make sure you hit Lowes in Oct and Nov. They give away the stock end of season.

Indeed. I picked up 'First Frost'. And 'August Frost' at Lowe's last year for $1. They were small in 4" pots.

Picked up a nice 'whirl wind' and a second 'Guacamole' for $2.00 at 'Smith's Marketplace' Clearance. They were in quart pots.

You can get awesome deals if you keep your eyes close on those garden centers. ❤️❤️

My Lowe's also does a 50% off perennials and 30% off shrubs on Labor Day weekend sale.

Day Break next to Great Expectations. Day Break is a FAST grower.!!!

Massive leaves just sprang up and burst open. ❤️

The leaves were not half that big when I bought it last October. Wow!!!

I didn't know Hosta could grow like that.

It's in a pot so I'll move it soon. I just put it there for the winter.

So to lend out a little bit of info.... to anyone who is thinking they have Hosta Fever. This is what I did when planting my potted Hosta into the ground. I save hundreds of pots.

I would buy a potted Hosta plant and immediately find another pot that was 2 or 3 times larger than the one it came in and transplant the Hosta from the small pot to the large pot and add good soil to make sure the Hosta roots had plenty of room to grow.

I mixed a little bit of coffee grounds, milorganite, and dried alfalfa grinds into the potted soil.

Then I would plant the larger pot right into the ground and cover it with pine needles or dried crushed Autumn leaf confetti.

That sounds good. I use my homemade compost, coffee grinds (the good unused coffee) I have so much from my hotel stays.

I put mine in the pots in full sun for a year and keep them well watered. They usual triple in size. The development is fast with a lot of eyes. I get my leap year in two years instead of three yrs.

I may dare try that with Day Break. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.

This hot dry desert sun out here is hard on even full sun perennials. We get leaf scorch on some of the trees.

That's where the air and sun are hotter than the plant's ability to draw moisture from the soil.

I've seen a few homes around here who put Hosta in afternoon sun. Their Hosta look terribly scorched by August and September. Maybe they need more water.

So how often do you put coffee grounds on your Hosta? And how much?

I will not lie by Sept they do not look pretty but my goal is growth.

They are in pots when they look bad I put the pots in the shade garden and it is usually about time for the tree leaves to start to fall and cover.

I grab a handful of coffee and spread around the garden. My shade garden is 15' x 30' I use about ten cups of coffee grind. In the pots 12" I use about a teaspoon. I mainly use the coffee grinds to kill slugs. I spread it in the spring before they emerge and in the fall. I never get any slug damage.

Wish there was a easy twice a year deer, rabbit, groundhog treatment.

How does putting them in full sun make them grow if they look bad?

Most hosta are shade "tolerant". More sun equals more energy to use for growth. In full sun they may burn and usually produce smaller leaves than in the shade. Take a look at some of the native habitats and you will see they are usually in more sun than you would expect. They grow in many different habitats some are more adaptable than others. The solid greens in general can take a lot of sun. The white and yellow variegation of many hosta are easily burned bu too much sun. The blues also lose their blum or waxy coating which makes them look blue in too much sun. They turn to more green in appearance. In general they are pretty adaptable.

There is an idea held by many that Hostas are shade plants and to some extent that is true but they do not do well in deep shade. One of pleasures in growing them is experimenting with different areas in my yard to see how they grow. I have a bed on the east side of my house that receives sun until 11.00 A.M. and then shade the rest of the day. They do well there and are the first to emerge in the spring. The ones on the north of my house receive morning sun and then later in the day evening sun. They are happy there. Beds under tall trees with broken shade do well. I try to get them as much light as possible with out burning.

Got me another beautiful baby Orange marmalade. Hoping it's the "Real Marmalade". Apparently it is a large cultivar. I honestly want my Hosta to look good. My purpose is to have a lush looking yard.... not a brittle half dead one. I get enough of that view in this dry climate. I have a lot of shade so I need shade tolerant plants but I also want some color in with all that green. Lol

As others have said they are shade tolerant. Maybe i did not explain clear. In all day sun They do not look bad until Aug Sept. Basically when I say bad they look like the ones in my total shade late sept oct. They go in to their fall sleep time a month earlier.

As with any growing plant and humans sun is good. Yes the blue is not as blue because the sun burns that wax coating that keeps them blue. My yellows are brighter. I have not had burn probably because of the moisture I supply because they are in pots.

I started doing this because of two reasons. My shade garden is deep dark no sun and I read it was how garden centers treated their liners to get maximum growth to get to market. I tried it with some small cheap hostas I picked up one year and since it worked I started doing it with my hostas.

By the way they grow so slow in my dark shade garden it takes them five years vs three yrs to get to their leap year.

It is said Hosta growth is.......First yr sleep, second year creep, third yr. leap. In deep shade my hostas sleep for three. yrs.

Well then that makes sense. I'm wishing I had put some of mine in the sun in pots. Since many are in pots I still can I suppose but at this point they have been in a lot of sun because the leaves on the trees are not yet grown fully out.

Orange Marmalade is pretty I really liked the orange color.

If you want color you can try bulbs and don't forget to add japanese ferns, I love the brightness my jack frost brunnera and I wiggle my yellow calla lily between the hosta leaves. It is in a pot so I can bring it indoors every winter.

Below are the pots where I last saw these plugs from Hosta Farm. nothing. 😡😡😡😡😡

I think they died.
1- Purchased an expensive plant from them on their 50% off sale. They sent me some fake NOID. Deliberately tagged it wrong and charged me full price.(Cheaters.)

2- The plants sent were tiny white plugs in dormancy, but they advertised the plant would be growing in a 4 inch pot.... (liars)

Their Hosta didn't make it through the winter even though I carefully babied them. (Poor product)

3- Hosta Farm never responded to my numerous emails or messages. (Scammers)

4- I hate Hosta Farm. 😡
