Several days ago I said I'd post a pic of my other inside begonia, it grows in the basement under fluorescent lights.

I'm trying to get a new cane begonia - mine has suffered a lot and although it's about 4ft tall, I only have 3 leaves at the top........ Thinking about cutting that top off and trying to get it to re-root and starting fresh. Sighing!

They root very easy. I took many a cutting and just put them in water with great success.
I heard many people don't like to root in just water. Some say the roots aren't strong enough. I have a lot of success with water rooting. Sometimes I put sphagnum moss in the water jar it gives the roots a good start for the transfer to dirt. Just don't put more than one cutting per container or you may never get them back apart. Green Grin!

I've tried re-rooting before and had no success - it ended up rotting, which is why I'm nervous this time around. I used to re-root very successfully, until the last 2 times. Didn't do anything differently?!?! Confused

Susan I think it needs to be warm in the area you are keeping the plants, this helps rooting also refilling the water with warm water helps too, just my experience Thumbs up

Just got this begonia rex about a week or 2 ago. I have it in miracle grow (80/20) perlite mix with rocks at the bottom of the container to help with drainage. The container has one drainage hole with an attached saucer, not sure its the best pot for it..? It sits about 4 feet away from an east facing window. I also mist the plant every once in a while. Any tips for helping this thing grow/stay alive?

I attached a picture of the plant, its so pretty! I love it!

In my gardening lifetime, I've come to the conclusion that begonias are the hardiest of plants. One even a brown thumb couldn't kill ... though not impossible. Given the right requirements or even a little bit of their requirements. This angel wing (I suppose that's what it's called) was/is literally the first plant ever given to me. About eight years ago.
I used to keep it on the kitchen counter under artificial lighting not suitable for plants. I think it was the good vibes I gave it that kept it going. I loved it so much my husband would get jealous and threaten to pee in it. Green Grin!
It froze this year in the green house but it missed me and came back.

@daisyrider - that's what "I" was taught that lovely big begonia was called, by my grandmother And my Dad - its leaves are about the size of a man's hand, right? Now, the Angel Wings are the tiny ones that are about 2" long, and 1/2" wide.........
Had a heckuva time finding one, but now I have, and you're right - they're hardy. Mine's coming back after suffering the summer 2015 outside, in a pot, and being blown over more times than I can count. It also got frozen a couple of times.
It's 4' tall and has 9 leaves near the top - they're starting to come lower though - used to only have 2 leaves at the very top Hilarious!
I love it when it reaches its full potential of 5 - 6 ft tall, with all the cascading bunches of flowers! Thumbs up
Susan
