How do I keep them from eating my portulacas?

I'm afraid the only way to protect your plants is by fencing them in. Eventually the squirrels will go elsewhere and you can remove the temporary fencing. There are some chemical deterrents you might try, too. Ropel, Deer Away and Liquid Fence are nasty tasting products that usually keep squirrels, raccoons, and deer from feeding on plants.
