The Top Recommended Varieties of Cucumbers

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Straight Eight')

The standard for open pollinated slicing cucumbers. Nice straight, dark green 8 inch fruits. Reasonably productive. Straight Nine is a shade better for me, but never atained the general popularity of Straight Eight.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Lemon')

This little cucumber starts out white and turns bright yellow as it matures. It's fine to eat at either stage, and it makes good pickles with an unusual shape when immature. I've never had bitterness from Lemon Cucumbers, and their unique look makes them popular for kids and party platters. Because the individual fruits are fairly small, a healthy vine will produce them in large numbers.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Marketmore 76')

I have grown this cucumber for several years and have always been pleased with its performance.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Boston Pickling')

This variety has grown well for me in Maryland and I really like the pickling type for taste.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Muncher')

Very crunchy cucumbers with good flavor and thin, smooth skin with no bitterness. Leave the skins on. I've been harvesting at about six to eight inches so not sure if they develop bitterness with age. They also make good bread and butter pickles. Will definitely plan to grow these again next year. Vines grew about five feet long.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Homemade Pickles')

This is the first year I have grown Homemade. I found the immature pickles to be too prickly to eat the rind. I would have to peel them. The taste when raw was excellent.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'National Pickling')

I don't pickle, but these are ok for eating fresh if you get them young. Just not my favorite salad cuke. If they get too large, they tend to turn an unattractive orange-yellow. Good yield.

Cucumber (<i>Cucumis sativus</i> 'National Pickling')
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'White Wonder')

I have grown this cucumber several times . It is never bitter and produces well . The vines seem to be a bit smaller than some other green varieties, so I just plant a few more a bit closer together.

Cucumber (<i>Cucumis sativus</i> 'White Wonder')
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Burpless')

I have been buying seedlings of this variety each spring from my local nursery to plant and grow now for years. A very tasty large slicing variety that sets a nice amount of fruit. I trellis mine so that the cucumbers grow straight.

Cucumber (<i>Cucumis sativus</i> 'Burpless')
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Marketmore')

Marketmore is an old tried and true variety of slicing cucumber commonly grown in home gardens. I have grown it for years. Produces well, with nice looking cucumbers all summer long.
