Don't know much about this shrub/tree as it was donated to our non-profit plant nursery. The leaves are about 1-1/2" long.

Plant ID apps can give good guess and bad ones. They generally use google to compare with photos, and also geographic location to help pick most likely based on that. I use an app with real people on the back end.
I don't know this plant. Not surpising as I am across the continent.
Plant it and they will come.

Dogwoods have opposite leaves. The subject species has alternate.

Hilarious!

Yes, the leaf only is a simliar shape, but leaf attachment alternate VS opposite is a definitive point. Which can be forgotten in the heat of 'battle' Smiling
Plant it and they will come.

Would never have got id from leaves alone.
One of my favourite trees.
The autumn colour makes it very special.
Peeling /flaking bark is just glorious...so tactile.
Had super one in old garden...moved.. 6 years ago planted a new baby one.
