A new year and a new veggie discussion. Of course not much going on in Northern Gardens. But our Southern neighbors might just be out there growing veggies.

Everyone come join the vegetable discussion.

That deep freeze melted all my cold weather crops.. but arugula might survive.
Plant it and they will come.

You're lucky. Mine died in 20 degrees. Sad

Tatsoi, could have cut it the next day as it looked perfectly frozen, but now rotten

Vates & Feathered Frills are doing the best of all of the kale that I sowed last year.

Bought seeds for Aspobroc. It is broccoli that tastes like asparagus.
Has anyone run across it or tried it?

Been around for a long time. Was the first of the broccoli- gai lan crosses . Marketed as Broccolini. so popular in the commercial market some 10 years ago, that Aspabrock was held from the retail market until recently. Lots of similar varieties like Johnny's Happy Rich. Grown for stems with small seed heads. Sweeter and more tender than heading broccoli. and no, you would need a very good imagination to mistake it for asparagus.

I've been trying Yod Fah, which sounds similar in style. So far, I plant a little too late, don't make it rich enough, and the dang caterpillars are still here in fall to decimate it until frost. But what I did get was tender and tasted good.
Plant it and they will come.

I've seen the Aspobroc and broccolini in the seed catalogs but have never tried it; I should grow some for my BIL, he likes the broccoli stalks better than the crowns. Smiling

There isn't enough land around here to grow the amount of broccoli I need. Rolling on the floor laughing I LOVE the stuff. I just can't grow it too well. I only get small florets off it and never a large head. Plus, the plants end up getting too cold. Crying
