Looks familiar. The leaves are fuzzy and coarse to touch.
Found in a neighbor's front yard in Chicago that I am weeding. I am afraid to pull it out before IDing it.
Thank you.

(agreed, I think elm. Not necessarily a desirable tree, if you even want a tree.) Wrong! see below
Plant it and they will come.

I'd call it a Hackberry.

100% deciduous tree, if that helps.
Plant it and they will come.

Elm leaves do not show secondary veining, and do not have three prominent veins originating at the same place at the base of the leaf blade. Hackberries would be my best guess. They fit the "fuzzy" description better, too. On elm leaves, if there are any hairs, will be very short, and you won't notice by looking, until you feel the grabbiness and look very closely. (one exception with the Rough Elm.)

hackberry is my best guess, as its leaves do have these three veins, with very noticeable, stiff hairs covering the leaf. The slight tendency for the stem to zing-zag also points to hackberry. Em stems never zig-zag.

I get those popping up everywhere for some reason, and they're not easy to pull out, have to either dig them up here or just cut the stem, which probably doesn't kill it. Nice to have a name to call them while I'm cussin' them out as I pull!

Agreeing on Hack-berry
Here is how to help on distinguishing from leave's venation. Although size of leaves among elm species are indeed varied, their venation relatively consistent.

Around here it is an obnoxious nuisance tree that actually can grow up to be quite attractive - then, for no apparent reason, it falls over - usually on a fence -- leaving behind thousands of annoying seedlings like the one pictured. (Celtis occidentalis)

What a great description, porkpal!
Yes once Leftwood reminded me, I could picture the veins of elm. I am not such a good tree ID er as I imagined. *Blush*
Plant it and they will come.

Hackberry / sugarberry is a wildlife plant...
https://nababutterfly.com/cate...

As far as pulling?
Easy...
Wait till after a rain... no problem.

This week, I dug a 12 foot tree out of the garden... Dry as it is, still nothing to it... If I'm not planning to re-plant, just cut through the laterals with a mattock and out it comes... easy.

I want some hackberry trees... But I don't necessarily want all the hackberry trees that come up.

Thank you, everyone. I will pull it out after the rain this afternoon and tomorrow.

Hackberry also has an annoying tendency to form what look like seedlings but are actually coming from runners or suckers from a more extensive root structure of nearby trees, especially if recently downed or injured tree. They are impossible to pull and come up by the hundreds. Very annoying.

I've never seen that with hackberry.
yes with callery pear, and occasionally tupelo, persimmon, paw paw...

haven't seen it with elm or hackberry... maybe it's a Missouri thing.

I've never seen a hackberry sucker, either. Although, many trees will sucker under certain abnormal conditions. Usually, it's when all or most of the tree is is cut, killed, or somehow severed from the root system.
