Blooming Artichoke

I would have never guessed what this was if I didn't see the sign next to it, taken at Chicago Botanic Garden.

As my niece once said after she saw all the artichokes in bloom growing in my garden.
"Oh no , you mean you don't eat them and just let them bloom ‼️"
I replied, "All the bumblebees luv to snuggle and sleep inside the purple inflorescence at night ". My nice response - "🙄" .

This was taken back in August of 2011, and I'm pretty sure I took a pic because I couldn't believe an artichoke flowers like that, even though I still thought it was pretty ugly. I flipped this one left to right when I made a banner from it.

Ohhh 😲 I was wondering about when you harvest the artichokes I thought after it blooms! That's a hard decision as I love a good artichokes dip!

I didn't make that connection until you mentioned it, Laurie! But that's what it always reminded me of in the back of my mind, a huge thistle plant, I just couldn't place it.
