It was difficult to decide when to launch the daylilies of the Southern Hemisphere for 2017-2018. My clumps have flowered every month this year. However, buds are now popping through the foliage everywhere, the temperatures are increasing, and parents and their baby birds are walking through the beds.

Thanks Regina. We should have a bumper season this year. @bron has lots of blooms too at the moment. Tasmania will be still freezing @dellac compared to us in the subtropics.

Hi Glen,

I have COURTNEY ANNE-an Australian daylily! It is a great performer for me and one of my favourites. Love the little chick!

Thanks Ginny, she's one of my favourites--she's a small flowered variety and minis and smalls are my favourites. Holds up brilliantly to our heavy rain too.

I am looking forward to the blooms from our members in the Southern Hemisphere!

Courtney Anne is beautiful. That is a hybridizer that I have not seen here in Canada (as far as I can remember).

Valerie,

She has been a really good plant for me. I thought long and hard before buying her as I wasn't sure how well an Australian evergreen would cope with Yorkshire weather but I am so glad I did. She always has beautifully shaped flowers and even in cold, wet weather shows her eye and edge.

Really beautiful pattern and colour combination.

Edited--found my own picture of it in my garden, taken this year.

This is what she looks like in cool, wet, cloudy weather. Every bloom was like this one.

COURTNEY ANNE was bred by Les Holton from Toowoomba, southeast Queensland, Australia. From what I can gather, he was highly regarded in the early 2000s and was considered an excellent line breeder. I do not know much about him and am unsure if he is still alive. I will give his cultivars a good eyeball now, Nikki (can you add your picture to the data base too. The ones I uploaded where from daylily sellers, with permission of course). His EMILY ELIZABETH is supposed to be good as well.

Today, this is the last bloom of ECHOES OF THE PAST x BETTY SMITH.. This seedling and the previous bloom are from Della. Nearly all the blooms of this one hung, not separating at the very tip of the bud. However, happily, the last two did manage to open fully unaided.

Will put the pic and performance report on database later today.

I can't remember who/where I got Courtney Anne from, I have a feeling she came from Robert Grant-Downton along with Star Child and Honky Tonk Blues rather than one of the few daylily gardens here. I certainly haven't seen her in any of the catalogues since.

So glad Nikki that you tried an evergreen Australian plant and have had great success. I too have been trying to grow some temperate shade plants like Astilbe, heuchera and hydrangeas in our subtropical clime. They need shade and much watering, but so does nearly every plant here, even my Australian natives. Our first rain in many weeks recently was over in an hour, but did at least refill my water tank.

More of my hems are departing from their registered characteristics. MOONLIT ORCHID, MAKING A SPLASH and MARCIA FAYE went completely deciduous and are now putting up good foliage. CHANGING LATITUDES did too, but it is registered as a Dormant. Some registered as Dormants that I have, remained evergreen. I am learning that some which appear to have ratty foliage are in fact being semi deciduous. I tend to remove the foliage b4 we have rain. But that is almost never nowadays. But lucky we are not having hurricanes like Texas. So sad that the water cannot flow away there.

This is a poor pic of my FFE on NIGHT WHISPERS which bloomed a few weeks back.

And an awful flash pic of BETTY WARREN WOODS 2 days ago. At least it shows it is not a golden yellow except for small patches on the sepals. It still looks good even late at night. Couldn't detect much fragrance.

Great to see your blooms Bron.
Flowering today: this was sold to me as HEMEROCALLIS LILIOASPHODELUS but, as the years go on, I doubt its identity. It's orangeness grates.

The warming days are bringing forth life such as this Green Treesnake, a harmless colubrid (frogs disagree with this assessment, however).

Glad to have some more cool nights and not hot days (less than 75 degrees). But the wind is drying out some buds, so big watering tomorrow. Hope I wake better than this morning, when my neck and shoulder were in spasm.

The snakes are certainly about. Even though it was clearly dead, I used a long stick to turn over the one I saw a few weeks back. Even I could identify it as an eastern brown from the light tam splotches on cream belly. The kookaburras are yelling lots so hopefully catching some for their lunch.

Am glad too of the owls around here.

@bron--I love Kookaburras, there is a bird garden near me and I used to take my Dad there to see the birds and the Kookaburras and Gaia Cockatoos were his favourites.

I always felt sorry for them though having come from somewhere beautiful and hot like Australia to end up in cold, wet, Yorkshire.

I also have a little silver kookaburra bead for my trollbeads bracelet that came from Australia and also one with a little tasmanian devil, part of the proceeds for the sale of these went to help research the Tasmanian Devil facial cancer which I understand has devastated the devil population.

Edited--forgot to say, I also have trouble with neck, back and shoulder pain following a car accident that damaged my spine and caused mobility problems--the best thing I have found that helps it is ultrasound on my cervical spine at the top of my neck.

You can buy little machines for home use and they aren't too expensive--handy for when pain killers by themselves aren't enough.
