I have this pest everywhere. I fight it every year. For years I did not have a reaction to the weed. I could pull it bare hands and nothing happened. I guess I used up my 9 lives against harm. A few years ago I had such a bad case of oooozing from my face hands legs I had to see a doctor.

I just want to share what I have used.....
I gather up my bottle of alcohol and paper towels. When I come in contact I pour the alcohol all over and wipe down with the towels.

If I am sitting around and I see the tell tale signs of the little bumps and blisters I get cotton soak it in peroxide and bandage the area with a bandage so the peroixde can soak in and not dry out.

I have purchased a poison ivy cream that drys like baking soda but it does not seem to kill it as quick as my dollar store alcohol and peroxide.

Hmmm.
Have you tried lye soap?

Yesterday or whenever.... I ran the string trimmer over a patch of poison ivy, and then bathed from head to foot...
Later, I spread a couple flakes of hay full of fire ants... around the tomatoes.

I noticed that my hands seemed to be breaking out in blisters... Quickly, I grabbed some fire place ash and made a paste, left it on for an hour or two... All better.

Be careful with ash, it's caustic, will dry your skin, and may burn...

Thank You! I have been plagued with PI ever since we moved to this house. The timber and the edges of the timber by our yard are full of it and it just keeps getting worse. My DH never gets it but I swear I just look at it and it jumps on me (not really but it seems like it Whistling Whistling ). I'll try this next time. I've tried several other remedies and they really dry the skin out.

Ginny, get some Tordon and use it on the PI. You just break a stem (and wear gloves when using it) spray the broken part a few times and the PI will die. That goes for any woody plant you use it on. Poison Ivy spray by Ortho works good too but not quite as good as Tordon. Find at a farm store.

My poison ivy just laugh at all weed killer.

The alcohol gets the oil from the PI off your skin.

@Legalily, it is not your imagination. It is happening to me too. I think the birds are getting in it and sitting on the things I touch and sit on. That is why I said if I am sitting inside all of a sudden I will see the rash somewhere on my hands, arm, legs and I know I have not touched anything. Just go out and sit on the patio or water the plants. I come in and I have been PI attacked.

I am on acres of land and the stuff is everywhere, I sprayed vinegar and salt on it one year and it killed the patch that were near the woods. But you have to spray that when it is hot and not going to rain for at least a week.

I never thought about the birds but the dog was bringing it to me until we put in an underground fence to keep her out of the timber. She would run in the timber and then when I was bending over working on the yard she'd run up behind through my legs and lick my face. I kept getting it between my knees and finally figured out why Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm with you on the dogs! PI, Tics, they bring me all kinds of summer treats, lol

I don't know about birds, but if you hear lawn equipment, go inside. My neighbor isn't allergic and he took the weedwacker to a bunch at the edge of his property- hundreds of feet away from my house and I got it all over! I was a mess - he basically aerosolized it and chemical warfar-ed me! It was IN MY EARS!

I still pick a cool day after the leaves come out, when I can go out in a turtleneck, latex gloves under good kitchen rubber gloves, sleves tucked under gloves, which I tape down, bandana around my nose and mouth like a bank robber and safety glasses.. and I pull and pull till there's nothing left- and I can fill a 30 gallon garbage bag- outter gloves go in the trash bag, inner gloves stay on to tie up the bag- then clothes straight to washing machine, careful to take them off right side out, and I go straight to the shower. I usually get away without getting any. I feel a little silly, but its the only way to keep it at bay- otherwise it just invades everything and I get it all year. Its worth it.

My dermatologist told me that PT is airborne I liked it much better when I wasn't as sensitive. She also said, Xzyal is the best OTC antihistamine out there today. It works when I see a lesion! It helps my body not to over-react to PI. Look for a coupon. It could be expensive!

@Legalily
It is an antihistamine. Allergies or reactions to things such as PI are often a body's over reaction. Histamines are produced to help fight the allergen but sometimes the body doesn't know when to stop and you react to those histamines. Hence the term anti-histamines. Here's a short explanation.

To follow up. The last episode I had the doc recommended 1-2 OTC Zyzal during the day, Rx Atarax at bedtime, and the Rx topical cortison Diprolene on the lesions. Cleared me up pretty fast within 2-3 days.
She told me to stop using Tecnu PI wash, Caladryl/Calamine, benadryl, and low dose cortisone cream.

I have the Tecnu wipes when I'm outside if I know I come in contact I just wipe my hands down right away. I've used Ivy Dry (really dries the skin out though) and a prescription cream from the doctor, and Zanfel to get the oils off right away when it shows up. I've been told if you get it within a couple hours original Dawn blue dishwashing liquid takes off the oils.
I'm thinking I'll try the Xyzal to see if that works for the itching. When it's really bad I get a cortisone shot (can't tolerate the pills).

Ginny I can give shots all day but I'm still a chicken getting them. I opted for the Prednisone pills and cortisone cream. Also this is strange but I run hot water over the area as hot as I can stand it and that helps the itch. I use Ivy Dry also. Many people can handle Virginia creeper but it breaks me out just like the PI.
