Thanks. Last year it had the final bloom on Nov. 1 so it kept me smiling for a long time. The deer do try to devour it but it bounces back very well.

I have to chuckle, my oldest and first daylily was the original mama of all daylilies ... Ditch Lily. I had the single bloomer and the double bloomer. For some reason, after a few years, they disappeared in my garden. Probably too hot and dry here in the summer for them.

A former neighbor gave me some ditch daylilies and I'm so glad I left them for the person who bought my home. They were nice enough for a newbie to the world of daylilies but can't compare to anything in the last 40 years and the beauty of so many of them.

The former neighbor was Pauline Isabelle Reid Loeffler (PIRL) and she lived to be 102+. She gardened until she was 95 so she was an excellent role model for me.

Becky, I am surprised the ditch lilies did not make it. I did not know there was a place on earth they could not survive!

Arlene - I like your screen name, too! Very nice story behind the name!

Concerning Ditch Lilies....

Years ago, a very generous online gardener sent me a box full of Ditch Lilies from her yard. She was dividing them. I planted them in several areas of my yard in amended garden beds. For two years they grew, thrived, and bloomed like crazy! They were beautiful. But the third year only about half showed up in the Spring. Each year there were fewer and fewer returning. I still have a couple, but they rarely grow and never bloom anymore. I haven't a clue other than the heat and drought conditions. Being called "ditch" lilies, I assume they need a lot of water? If that is so, that is probably why they didn't make it. My yard tends to be more like drought conditions.
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.

Thanks, Becky.

I never even considered they could die out since they prosper along roadsides here without any irrigation and even in years of drought.

I grow lots of older cultivars and like collecting them just like the newer ones.
I have 'Apricot' (Yeld 1893) which is the first registered daylily.

Of the species my oldest will be Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus described by Carl von Linné - better known by his Latin name, Linnaeus - in 1753 in the opus that started it all, Species Plantarum.

I also have Kwanzo. Apparently, it was scientifically named as a variant of fulva in 1866 by the German Eduard von Regel in his magazine, Gartenflora. It hasn't flowered in my garden yet this season but It has many scapes powering up. After four years of nearly dying, it is now expanding out like a miniature universe!

Thumb of 2015-11-05/Gleni/1cf0bc

Today this flowered for first time for me: Hemerocallis citrius. It was described by Eugenio Baroni, 1897. I picked this up on eBay and supposedly it came from Vietnam. Well, it was the whitest and floppiest fan I ever got. But doing fine now.

Thumb of 2015-11-05/Gleni/05ecf4

Then the next oldest is TINY PUMPKIN Hudson 1975

The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.
