I got this plant in early May from a Bay area nursery, I guess it was overwatered a bit hence some yellowing leaves then. Really good plump roots when I repotted and it really grows so well indoors. Right now it is forming new sets of leaves, ready to unfurl. Love its very glossy leaves ![]() ![]() |
Wonderful! I love that plant, too. Be the Captain of What's Gonna Happen! |

I have been watching how this plant will do unfurling its leaves, like waiting for drama to unfold ![]() |

Oh pretty! I just got my first ZZ a few months ago. It's doing fine with just light but no sun and I forget to water it fairly often. I think that might be good. All the light is coming from one direction where it is and it is starting to grow in that direction. I started to turn it and then just decided to let it do what it wants as the light is not going to change directions. They are really cool plants, primordial. A day without sunshine is like, you know, night. |

When I saw a zz plant for the first time, my imagination took off and I envisioned what it could turn into if it had an unbridled, precocious growth habit. Here's a link to a page where I wrote about it (with pictures). Of course, i couldn't call it a "zz plant" anymore, so using the rules of botanical nomenclature, I made a new name for my plant, Pinnatidendron altissimum. http://www.aroidiaresearch.org... My ZZ plant is growing new leaves once more..must be responding to the temps going warmer now. But not as much as it did last June 2013..unless it is just slowly getting on to it. It just grows so slow..sometimes makes you think if it is truly alive. ![]() ![]() |

So this is the full image of my ZZ plant as of 15Apr2014:![]() Yesterday, 18Apr2014, my hubby has requested if he can possibly get one of the offshoots. I said, I have never done that, but with much prodding, we went ahead and repotted the plant to get some of the offshoots. So here is the rootball, after I have pried it from the pot: had to tie the leaf stalks to make it easier to move the plant. ![]() Such a big rootball, so have removed the soil a little more..and it revealed the rhizomes and the roots. seems like we can separate 3 plants from this mass: ![]() With careful prying, we were able to separate the rhizomes, not much resistance, for awhile I thought I may have to chop them off from the other. Just a little careful disentangling them, pulling them apart. Here is one of them, and a close-up, really looks like a potato: ![]() ![]() So got the pots and repotted them away.. And so here are the three new ZZ plants! ![]() ![]() ![]() Just so happy to be able to repot and separate the plants! ![]() |
Thanks for the photo essay Tarev. Beautiful plump roots and rhizome. You obviously have the touch and not just with Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Evan |

I will try now to do a leaf cutting propagation. Have read a lot about it, but have personally not done any ..so will try it now. I have read it takes a long time..several months long. Since it is Spring, feels like a good time to experiment on it. Took some leaves from this one: ![]() And here are the leaves in their little containers, planted on some mix of cactus soil, pumice, and some of my kanuma/akadama mix. I just added the last one, since I have it on hand. Can ably keep the soil damp and still provide good drainage. These ones have a longer petiole, leaves a bit older: ![]() These ones have very short petiole, just want to see if it will work too: ![]() Fingers crossed! |

I got curious how the leaf cuttings are doing. The one with the very short petiole..not doing good..am not even sure if it will work. But the other three seems more promising:Main leaves are lighter in color now. I can see a roundish small bump, so it dries out the tip end, and seems to gather all of what is left of the leaf towards that forming bump. But it is still very young..will check it out again in another month. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

tarev: I no longer grow ZZ plants but a few years ago I stuck a couple of ZZ leaves in a jar of water ... it took many months but they eventually produced a bulb, roots and new little plants. ![]() ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |

Wow! In a jar of water! That is good to know...hmmm...I want to try that one too!! Thanks Lin! |

tarev, it was fun; For years I had a shelf in my kitchen with vases of pothos and philodendron rooted and growing in water and one day I stuck a couple of zz leaves in a vase of water and put it on the shelf. Every so often I'd add a bit of water to each vase and then one day I decided to change out the water in all of them and found the zz leaves had produced small bulbs. ~ Playing in the dirt is my therapy ... and I'm in therapy a lot! ~ |

Been awhile since I have updated conditions of my zz plants..well..they are so slow growing ![]() Anyways, I saw a new growth in one of the containers..I am always excited to see them..sometimes with their very slow growth I wonder if it is really still alive ![]() ![]() ![]() The leaf cuttings I was trying to grow went kaput...oh well..I will just concentrate on the existing older plants. |
