Oh man, I feel your pain. Can you float it in water? I wonder if that would help it to stay open for a bit?

Right there with you, Ted. It's a heartbreaker when something happens to our beautiful orchid flowers, especially when we wait so long for them sometimes!

I had this little Den fall from it's hanger to land upside down on the patio last week. It had 5 blooming spikes, and only one survived the fall. Crying Happy to say at least the plant seems to have survived, and it's a prolific bloomer so it will come along again soon.

I think we all have lost spikes, buds, one way or another, it is always sad!
The other day my white Phal basket slipped off the bar and I found it in the morning not quite on the floor. It had landed on a soft Pelargonium below, surprisingly fully intact. Lucky!

Ted, that hybrid Lycaste might just be one of the most popular orchids ever sold! Every where you look, you see that gorgeous flower. So not only is it popular but it must be fairly easy to grow. It has been around for at least ten years, maybe more.
Plants with that kind of track record are few and far between. I am thinking that Oncidium Sharry Baby is one such orchid.

Nick, I've had that plant for about 7 years. Last year I divided it. This year both plants put out a spike. The second plant is just about ready to open. I brought it inside to keep it out of the wind!

Exciting! 👍

Here is the Orange Nuggett again, with both spikes open

And the noid Coelogyne looks really promising. In my mind I am increasingly leaning towards Coel rochussenii. It is still sitting on the lower shelf, I better wait before I move it up to let the spikes trail.

Hasn't she posted images before? I seem to remember that Oncidium as well as other backyard orchids.
That is quite some plant!

Very excited to have this one blooming so well this year. Thanks of course to the cold, rainy weather we've had through December and January. Just slightly disappointed that it is this orange color - it has reverted a long way away from what it was originally, which were beautiful creamy white large flowers with pink on the lips. Here it is from 2018:

I do give it credit for surviving 7 years in the Florida heat. I have another division of this plant in another pot, but showing no signs of blooming. Sad

Gee, Elaine, that doesn't even look like the same plant. Do you think it is all due to your weather? Or maybe your soil or fert? Just curious. In any case they look really good. Nice growing.
I have had 3 Cymbidiums for years. Faithfully they bloom and I have divided them successfully. In August of 2022 I visited a local nursery that to be honest, is pretty run down. But they have a great collection of Cymbidiums. They have some connection with growers in Australia, New Zealand and here in the U.S. Anyway I wanted to expand the number I had and picked up 4 plants. I was told they were at least a year away from blooming, but they looked healthy. Right now every Cym. I have is in spike. Can't wait to see what the new guys look like.

Shrug! No idea, Ted. I'm flabbergasted that it has reverted too. This was a "bargain" plant that I got in bloom from Costco in 2013, with (of course) no tag. So I don't know the original name and can't guess the parents.

It has never bloomed dependably, wanting the cool damp weather to set flowers. But 5 years after I got it, it put up the above - one nice spike of the cream blooms. Then it went about 3 years with no blooms, and popped up with these orange ones the next time it did anything in 2021. That was the year I divided it, in an effort to isolate the orange blooming plant, and see if the cream one would return.

I do still have another division from that, and despite same care, same location it has not put up any spikes that I can see. So I have to wait for another year (or more) to see if I still have the original plant. There's a smaller div in a small pot, too but it is in a different location, might come along later, let's hope. Crossing Fingers!
This is what it looked like when I got it. I bought a yellow one at the same time that only lasted a year or two. They really were magnificent, though.

Could the color change be temperature related?
Elaine, didn't you say that it is a sporadic bloomer and maybe your unusually cooler weather may have produced a crop of flowers? It would not be too much of a stretch to think that cooler temps or fertilizer may have contributed.
I seem to recall a white species
Like Cym. ensfoldii or some such spelling being more tolerant of warmer temperatures.
And if we accept that, depending upon a nonwhite parent used to make a warmth tolerant hybrid could we get a bit of variation in color. From creamy whites to paler oranges to medium orange might not be too outlandish. But what do I know?

Not sure, Nick because it only blooms when we get the cooler temperatures in December and January like we've had this year. It simply doesn't do flowers if the winter weather is too warm for it's liking.

There was speculation last time we discussed this plant that there just may have been some baby rhizomes of the orange one in the pot when I bought it. It took a few years for the orange flowers to appear. It's obviously got some of the heat-tolerant genes from somewhere because it's outlived all the other 8 or 9 Cyms I've bought over the years. Last summer was SO hot, and all 3 divisions of it survived, albeit with some help from me, moving them around to the coolest shady places all summer. Rolling my eyes.

I usually get some to bloom, but because we have had 2 years of sustained low 40's-high 30's at night the Cyms are all happy and putting out spikes
