My big tall Philodendron rugosum had to get the chop, it was running out of support. One nice huge top cutting, 7 nice fat stem cuttings and the butt cut I left in the ground to regrow.

Have anyone propagated the allamanda from stem cutting?
Do you take soft or hard wood cuttings? When's the best time?

Daughter has an Indian Red Peach tree. The fruit is really fuzzy, dark green red streaky on the outside and white inside. Its ugly but delicious.

The story is it was brought to the Americas by the Conquistidors. The indigenous peoples planted them in the south west and the variety is old enough that it grows true from seed.

I'll let you know in 3 or 4 years. Smiling

@Piksihk. I just noticed that no one responded to your question about Allamanda. This should help.

Last weekend I was busy harvesting the best parts of summer-grounded plants, to save inside for winter. Need to finish up this weekend in case there is frost next week. 3 nights in the 30's are predicted.

Plants that can't handle winter here, in the ground for summer, then taken inside to be protected from winter. I'm using them "as annuals" so during summer, it looks like a tropical landscape. It's a zone denial thing. I admit, I'm afflicted with tropical wannabe-itis. House is crazy plant-y when it's cold out.

Sometimes some of them grow back the next year from roots left in the ground, but not reliably enough to not save some inside to make sure I still have that plant for next year.

Also, I don't enjoy watering pots when it's hot outside so I like to temporarily get rid of as many as reasonably possible. Anything that propagates easily can be handled this way. About half of the plants I do this with are sold "as annuals" in temperate locations, and the other half are more commonly found in the houseplant area.

In my list on here, there is a "summer grounded" category if you have that level of curiosity. I use that category to remind me which plants I won't have anymore if I don't grab some to bring inside for winter.

Then I can spend my $ next year on something new. I can't afford to buy hundreds of plants every year though.

I went through your "summer-grounded" list and yes, all tropicals. I don't have a summer-grounded list - I suspect they would all be eaten by the deer. And, I hate planting and potting so anything that can take care of itself is what I will plant. I have a lot of plants in ground I didn't plant and they can stay unless they are Trees of Heaven or some other plant I find annoying. My only regret is tulips. I would love to plant tulips but its just too warm. I do have an Angel Wing begonia and a Dwarf Date Palm in the ground under an oak tree. They survive the winter, at least have so far.

I see. Digging & planting things I've propagated is like crack to me. Can't get enough. When the landscaping is almost all not hardy, it's different every year and I don't have to worry about anything taking over. Except the weeds of course. Having the same not tropical landscaping every year would be boring for me.

Even without interference, it still changes drastically from year to year - a progression of plants (and animals) wandering through. The bluebells and cyclamens, originally planted on the slope under the dogwoods have traveled several hundred feet across the yard. A wide swath of color in the spring. This year, I discovered I was cultivating a whole slew of native orchids.

That sounds beautiful, and fun as well, in a different way. If we were all doing the same thing, there wouldn't be anything to chat about. I can't keep a cyclamen alive. Unrequited plant love.

This is about what I want to propagate... My cousin from Florida sent me some Palmetto seeds. I know, they're weeds but I want to try to grow them. Windmill palm trees come up in my yard all the time without any interference from me (I don't even own any Hilarious! ) so my thought is, set them on a pot of potting soil and wait. Anything more I need to do?

I dunno...they do grow like weeds here. I have Sabal palmetto all over my 5 acre property and they sprout up all over the road too. I'd say just plant the seed and ignore LOL they germinate here with no help from people

They just fall here. They get dispersed I'm sure by squirrels and mice. If you bury them make it shallow.

Best luck, Lucy! : )

I snipped the tips of 2 little false Aralia trees (Dizygotheca, Plerandra, Schefflera - plant with a real identity crisis!) While holding the little bits that I had removed, I wondered if a cutting so small could have any hope. Usually I just compost little bits like that. Out of curiosity, I poked them into the soil in the same pot and after about a month, the leaves are still green. I think they would have turned brown by now if they were going to.

What I removed was maybe ½" of the tip. Not enough to notice anything had been done, but should be enough to cause additional branches.

The 2 tree tips look much better than the Geranium (Pelargonium) stem that was stuck there about 2 months ago. If the Pel stem does nothing but stay alive until spring, that's fine with me.

@Wildbloomers, thanks for the link. I've been watching every YouTube video on allamanda. Now may not be the best time to try cuttings. I'll just try to keep it alive till spring.

Just collected seeds from the Texas crag lily and sowed them in pot.
Looking forward to seeing how these grow and how long before they produce blooms.

Has anyone sown seeds of salpiglossis? I don't believe these are suitable for my zone but they were at Cornelius/Calloway's. So I've been trying to germinate them the last couple of years with little success following instructions on package. Any advice?

What in the heck is a Texas crag lily?

The Palmetto seeds are dwarf palmettos. No trunks and live in swamps? This should be interesting...

I happened upon your post and wondered what a salpiglossis is, then found this article by a grower who says that most published information is wrong, including packet instructions, but claims to know how. Maybe it will help you.

He is absurdly wordy and long-winded, but finally gets to the point at the end. Gorgeous flowers!
