@hawkarica @Gina1960 or anyone else.
Should I just go ahead and cut this Pindo down? It is one of three I planted when I moved down here 8 years ago. The other two are doing great. This one never really took off and has looked like this for a couple of years. No new fronds in this time frame and the surviving ones have yellowed. The pictures that are hard to identify are of the crown. There was still a little green in there but it has done nothing for 2 years. I guess this is some type of crown rot? I hate to kill it but it is ugly and if you all think it is technically dead I will. Thanks.

Wow. I just don't know. I mean I always say where there's green there's hope. But that does look pretty bad. I wonder why that one has failed where the other 2 did not? Its hard for me to tell anything about the crown from the pics. If the fronds are all dying off it seems to indicate something wrong with the root system. Maybe trench around it and see if you can see anything wrong with the roots? It may be a goner.

Thanks for looking Gina. Standing right beside the tree I can't tell what is going on in the crown. It is just a mass of tangled dead pieces. I have pulled some out but it didn't help. My thoughts were the same, where there is green there is still hope. After 2 years I am ready to give up if nothing happens this spring. It has some sentimental value to me as my first palm tree or I would have cut it down earlier.

I hope it surprises you, Michael, and shows more green soon. It's always tough to toss a well loved plant.

Michael, Sounds and looks as though your palm is experiencing crown rot. If treatment is performed before it gets deep into the growing point it will survive. A good fix is pouring hydrogen peroxide 3% into the crown of your palm. A copper fungicide will also treat the problem.

Thanks Scott. I am afraid it is too late but I am going to try the copper fungicide. I think I still have some if I can find it. I just hate to give up.

I am inclined to try and raise up that caudex some more maybe and add that copper fungicide as well. Sometimes it helps. Yours is in the ground already, which is good, so maybe improve on that site's soil around as well. Maybe it is getting too wet which causes the caudex damage?

I have seen one of my younger cycads with very bad caudex growth, leaves dying off. But I had it in a self watering container then and planted too deep. It was easier for me to pull it out, change to a better draining container and made the media grittier. In time, it grew a new caudex on top of the older damaged caudex. Just had to wait very long and patiently for this recovery and the new flush of leaves every summer.

After the changes I made, it grew much better, a real long wait but well worth it.

You can clearly see the new caudex on top of the old caudex.Had to keep watch as it grows, at times I have scale attach on it, have to do alcohol/dishwashing soap/tabasco sauce swab

That is interesting Tarev, I have been growing cycads for 40+ years and while I have had several come back from the dead, I have seen one do that.

I have one out front that is probably from 1987. It looks dead, I am waiting to see if it rises from the grave. It'll be hell to dig out, to has a 3-4 ft trunk and is thick. How long did it take your supposedly dead ones to revive Alice?

One time after a particularly hard freeze it took 2 years - keep the faith.
I received a baby king sago as a gift in 1973 and it grew and grew. It eventually was in a 24" pot and when we moved to the coast in '98 we removed it from the pot to plant in the ground and it had produced 36 pups, baseball to softball size, which we removed and planted. More than 30 of them lived.
I understand the new owners of our home have removed them all. Shrug!

I think this one was planted in the ground when this house was built. Its one of three in front that are pretty equal in size. I think 2 are male and this one was a female. I keep hoping. Last year after the winter was done it just didn;t leaf back out, and has been a stump and still is. I keep hoping

As long as the caudex is firm you are good. Just have patience.
