I agree about the Egret Strut. You're getting wonderful shots, Melanie.

I've been trying to get a picture of my local mockingbirds drinking out of the white Bird of Paradise flowers, but I guess my rushing out there scares them off every time. Sadly, I have to open the door from the pool cage and the noise it makes spooks all the birds.

Here's the flower, moments after the bird skedaddled. There is always a little water in the calyx, the dark part along the bottom, even in dry weather so the birds get drinks from these flowers all the time.

Great pics, Philip Thumbs up Love the bullfinch. But I think your blue tit might be a great tit? Blue tits have a little blue cap on top of their heads and don't have the heavy stripe down their front:

You're right, Philip, they're very fidgety and not easy to catch. I had a power cut yesterday, so spent all my time sitting at the window with the camera! Robins, by contrast, almost pose for you - I think this one's saying, 'What do you mean, I'm getting fat?'

I was pretty much not around yesterday so am trying to catch up. Gosh, I am loving these fabulous photos of birds from other parts of the world! The bird threads are taking on a decidedly worldly look and I am thrilled to see it.
The little wren looks much like our Carolina Wren. Other than that, the birds seem quite different and more colorful. I still think the robins are far prettier than our robins. Our robins are "beefy" whereas yours seem cuddly cute.

Melanie, you're improving by leaps & bounds. Your photos are getting better & better. I'm still struggling with my new camera. I have some photos to share but not the time to post them and after all the wonderful photos I have just seen, I am reluctant to share my cruddy ones.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

I'm not sure it's my photo skills as much as my stalking skills. Rolling on the floor laughing I figure if I can manage not to scare the butterflies, I can manage not to scare the birds! Plus, I think the ones at MOSI are pretty tame because of the bird feeders, the trash, and who knows what people are feeding them.

I'm intrigued - I tried searching for large US birds with platform nests, but couldn't find one that fitted. The shape of the bird looks almost pheasant-like (but they of course nest on the ground). Perhaps Lin, Becky, Mellie or another of the experts can help? Confused

We do have some colourful birds in Europe, but nothing comparable to your amazing cardinals, bluebirds and buntings. The most colourful we get here in the south of England are the kingfisher (we see one every summer at our big pond, but it's really shy and I haven't managed to get a photo), and some parrots, which are descendants of escaped pets - there are quite big colonies of them, which look very odd in the English countryside. Hmm, did you see this bird actually go into the nest? Looks like the shape of a mourning dove to me. But the nest looks like a squirrel's nest, maybe?

I'm pretty sure our mourning doves nest on the ground here.

I've seen a few nests over the past few months because of the trees losing their leaves and I had a whole discussion with Dad about what a squirrel nest looks like. He's has a long history of squirrel hunting.

Mika, I may be a butterfly expert, but let's not give me too much credit on birds just yet. Rolling on the floor laughing We have wild Parakeets here in Florida. We have a lot of escaped things here in Florida. Sighing!

I think I'm seeing the bird how Mika sees it. Doesn't it look like it has a very long neck? I tried to make sure I wasn't looking at the tree, but it looks like it has a long neck and a "ring" around its...shoulder area? What do you call that on a bird, anyway? And the tail looks pretty long, too. I'm going to the movies and I expect answers when I get back! Rolling on the floor laughing
