Stinker Sticker Solution: Scrape the sticker with a knife (careful not to damage pot) a few times across the face.
Peel off as much of sticker as you can from the edges.
Using Olive Oil, or a product called 'Goof Off (find it in hardware store),' saturate the sticker and let it sit for a bit. The oil/'goof off' will dissolve the adhesive in the sticker and you can slowly work to remove it. Once removed, use dish soap to wash away the residue. Goodbye Sticker Sadness!
Does this work on a clay pot? Seems like it might leave a permanent discolored area on the porous surface. The glue from the stickers does that even when the sticker itself is long gone.
Yes, it does work! And the residue will come off. The oil or Goof Off will dissolve the glue residue. It's basic principle of Chemistry, 'Like dissolves Like." Oil, and glue are both non-aqueous (not woter soluable) compounds (which is why glue works to adhere so well, even in rain when sticker gone), and therefore oil can "dissolve" the glue.
Then, the Soap (wich has a hydrophilic end and a hydrophobic end to the molecule--a "water-loving" end and a "water-hating" end) attaches to the oil/glue solution(hydrophobic end), and the water-loving end of the soap molecule (with glue-oil attached to the other end) gets rinsed away with water.
Quick Recap: dissolve the glue with another non-aqueous"Like" substance. Then use a Soap to attach to that so it can be rinsed away with water.
I try the olive oil first on clay or terra cotta pot labels. I go thru the steps all the way to rinsing. Then i assess, and repeat from beginning if necessary. If you soap and rinse it quickly, the oil wont have time to penetrate the terra cotta/clay. Notice that the adhesive has not necessarily "penetrated" the pottery to create a permanent stain, you just havent gotten all the glue removed from the surface.
When the olive oil doesnt work, I bring out the big guns, the Goof Off.

Remember, just because the sticker is gone (often made of paper which DOES dissolve in water), doesnt mean the glue is gone with it.
The purpose of scratching at the label and peeling off as much as possible is to "expose" the glue used to hold the sticker in place. The label on its own won't "stick" to the pot. The glue "sticks" to the pot and label, both.
Expose the glue, dissolve it with a "Like" substance, and wash away with a soap and water. Smiling

I lived the idea of the file cabinet

Who cares if it rots- it was free! It will be soo cool! so what it doesn't last forever!

I happen to have a left over roll of floor underpayment- basically really thick plastic, but if you cut up a contractor bag it would work just as well. I often line metal containers with plastic to hold dripping water, then place plastic pots inside with something to kep them elevated out of the water- soda bottle caps are my go to becasue they're always around at my house. I've also cut rings out of scraps of PVC pipe on my mitre saw.

Purpleinopp- I have a TON of zebra wondering jew- its hard as nails and would drape beautifully from that planter with all the sun. I'll send you all the cuttings you want for the cost of shipping. I have purple queen too- although it doesn't stay so purple inside during NY winters! Its definitely due for a big haircut.

Paula, that's gorgeous! TY so much for the sweet offer but I also have more of that than I know what to do with. A few times per year I have to pull chunks of it out so other plants can have some space. It is hardy here.

I agree! It would look smashing with tons of WJ spilling out of the cage but the purpose of the cage is to confine the Epi to the size of the cage.

Totally dropped the ball here in regard to repurposing for new items for "pots" this fall. I guess I was in denial that cold weather was coming, waiting for it to cool off below 90, and then it was sudden, I was out of time to putz around & just had to quickly put plants into the fugly plastic pots that were stacked in the corner of greenhouse.

I am way more green with envy than even my sun starved WJs- I'm hoping it will get above freezing in NY! I don't even want to talk about the envy your green house inspires!

Here's some repurpose-
Ikea container meant to hold kitchen utensils- like spoons and ladles etc under $3 ea... and my favorite find of all time, a copper umbrella stand (behind Baby Bear the dog)

I walk around garage sales looking for anything I can drill a hole through or fit a pot inside!

Salmon poacher? Sure! Copper tea kettle- definately! Anything made of copper.
Monstera in a teapot? Why didn't you say so! LOL.. I did drill holes through the bottom of the pot

I'm thinking of taking a big old tiffany style glass lampshade out of my Grandparent's diningroom (the house is being sold) and filling it with dirt over a layer of packing peanuts- let it drain out the hole for the wire... but its huge- like 30" across and I'm not sure it will stay upright upside down. With my two dogs, Baby Bear is a 90lb waste high mastiff and Bully is a 75lb battering ram of a pitbull. both under two y.o. Stability is a big deal in my house.

Those are awesome! Please don't do that to the lamp if it really is old. Even if it's not Tiffany brand, it could still be quite valuable.

I replaced an old pool filter and repurposed it. The height was great for my herbs as I could easily pick a sprig to cook with.

I went a little rose crazy one year and needed more containers. I had a large collection of chlorine buckets, so that's what I used:

Turbo/Paula: I just put an orchid in the exact same container. DIL was donating it. I snatched it and said, "Yes, to MOM, you are, please."

She thought I was crazy to use it for a plant, so this will be fun to show her. Thank you for a little validation that plant people are container hoarders by necessity. I will take a pic in the morning. Loved the post.
