I've had this particular palm for around ten years, and it tends to bloom around twice a year. Each it time it does I wonder, is it male or female? Do I have to dissect the enclosed flowers to find out, or is it possible to tell from their outside appearance?

Should be similar to C. elegans. The difference is observable even with my poor eyesight, but I couldn't see your blooms well enough to have an opinion.

A discussion about male/female C. elegans:
The thread "Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) seeds, male vs. female" in Tropicals forum

Palmpedia has some pics:
http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/...

I move my palms around so much, it's hard for me to keep track of which is which when not in bloom.

Also found pics of your species' blooms here:

Ah, thank you, that palmtalk link was just what I needed. Looks like I have a male, though the flowers haven't cracked open as in the pictures there. I've never noticed them to do so, but I'll keep an eye on them.

Happy to try to help your investigation. I wish the male/female thing was more widely discussed regarding these palms. In a fantasy world - labeled. People could buy the mate for their first plant and have fun with the seeds. ...but then I guess they wouldn't have so much need for buying pots of 37 crammed-together sprouts.

Best luck with your plant!
