Thread OP

Hi all,

I just recently bought the below succulent - I *think* it is a succulent. And I was wondering if anyone knew the name of it and also a few tips on how I should care for it? It seems to be losing its form, the leaves are coming off easily, withering slightly and there's even one slightly rotting leaf.

I am relatively new to the indoor gardening world but love the plants I do have as they make me happy. Please help me not kill this tiny and embarrassingly new plant!!

Thank you in advance!

Simone

Looking at your picture from the itty bitty screen on my smartphone it reminds of a bromeliad.

Hope someone with better eyesight and more knowledge will hop in here.

This might be better placed in the cactus and succulents forum for more results. @plantmanager, can a topic be moved to another forum?

There are droplets of water all over your plant, how much have you been watering it? What sort of mix is it planted in? Are you keeping it near a window so it gets light?
Last year after I moved into an apartment I bought succulents and cacti and went on to other different sorts of houseplants. What helped me more than anything to start to get a handle on indoor plants as opposed to the outdoor plants I had been used to, was to lurk here and elsewhere and read posts for hours at a time. As days and weeks wore on, the information started falling into place. Of course I asked questions too, but the hours of reading gave me a basic framework.

Yes, it should be moved to get the proper help. I've done that.

That is a Sempervivum (note fine hairs along the edges of the leaves). This thread should go to the Semp forum if it goes anywhere.

It looks like it needs much more light. How much has it been getting?

Hi Simone, so sorry I just now found this thread. Welcome! to NGA, so glad you found your way here.

Baja is correct, it is a sempervivum, and is in need of some changes right away. It would help us to know what your growing zone is, and what type of potting mix you have the plant in.
Sempervivum are alpine type hardy succulents and don't like to live indoors. They need sun and lots of air circulation to stay healthy. The amount of sun depends on where you live. They also need a fast draining potting mix, and should not be left sitting on/in a saucer. The excess moister will rot them.
It is also very helpful to top dress the surface of the potting mix with small gravel or chicken grit, being sure to place it up under the leaves to keep them from making contact with the soil.
