I bottom water mine in a pail of water, water almost up to rim of pot, for 20 to 30 minutes.
No water on top.
Brother told me its best way to aviod problems. He grew all his in house. Outside i dont believe it matters. Of course when pot gets to big ! What you gonna do but water from top ? As long as you have well draing soil.
