Cat, I know what you mean by trying not to discriminate against some birds ... but sometimes it's impossible not to.
We have the grackles and red-winged blackbirds during the winter and all spring here; they come in gangs and raid the feeders, keeping a lot of the other birds away. We have lots of Blue Jays here, they are year round residents and although some consider them bully birds, I've never noticed them being bullies. They do screech when there is danger (snakes, hawks etc.) in the vicinity but I've also seen them imitate the call of hawks to frighten other birds into hiding and then the Jays hit the feeders. Smart birds!
We have lots of year round resident Cardinals too and sometimes there are quite a few around while other times I only see a few visiting the feeders. This year we had lots of babies, both Cardinals and Jays and they are so cute to watch.
Well ... I'm out of here, have a few errands to run and then around 4 O'clock we are going out for an early anniversary dinner before the restaurants get crowded. We thought about driving up to St. Augustine to one of our favorite places but it's supposed to be stormy later and hubby is giving final exams for the summer semester today so we decided to stay local. Don't have a clue where we're going to eat, not sure what I feel like yet but it'll probably be seafood. I love the coconut shrimp at Bahama Breeze so I might see if I can talk him into going there for dinner. Have a great day everyone!
