I really like 'Arbatax' too. I couldn't believe how perfect it looked at my mom's house. I mean AMAZING! By the time it bloomed here the heat and drought were already in place, it looked good, but not to its potential.

Lovely lilies, loving Moredn Butterfly with George Slate. What a nice pairing Lovey dubby

Refreshing--Moby, that's very appropiate! Connie, your weather seemed to be about the best of anywhere this summer. You've got a beautiful, healthy looking crop of lilies. I'd have to say, too, that Sims pink edge F2 has some beautiful color blending. They're all pretty!

So far it has been a nice summer in the Willamette Valley. At least we haven't been hit with a heat wave (yet). No useful amount of rain either. Our rain will return in late September into October and that is reliably predictable. I don't water my lilies much during the summer and they seem to be quite drought tolerant. They do tend to be shorter with this regimen though.

Yes, shorter and more sturdy stemed. I'm not a supporter of watering much at all--only in dire circumstances (I call it being on life support). I am a very, very strong believer in heavy mulching and this summer, my mulching really served me well. It kept my soil temperature down too! I think it got up to 78' F one day but most of the time it runs between 66-73. But I will water about 10 days before blooming if they need it and again soon after blooming if it's dry. Luckily, I got 2.12 inches of rain overnight Wednesday here over a nine hour period--a real good soaker so that is just what the lilies needed and the timing is perfect for the bulb growth. But, leading up to this point, all of us here in the Midwest will tell you this summer has been a real stinker and something else to deal with. And not everybody got that rain that I got, so I am very, very lucky! What a feeling!

I bet all those vegetable gardens that got rained on were happy too!

Mulch is something I'm always short on. I had pine needles before my tree went down and they were enough for the garden area around it. I have to go out and buy bags (and bags and bags) of stuff and the fact is that rarely happens! At least we don't get real deep freezes here, at least not very often. And of course no meaningful snow in the winter.

Truly glad that you got rain, Lorn. If it were me, I think I'd cry happy tears. Weather folks are saying that we're in the worst drought in 56 years.

Moby, being an amatuer meteoroligist, I watch your weather as much as I do mine and I know your're in an awful bad way now; Gosh, this is something else! Us weather guys get a little 'goofy' when a storm of any significance comes along so you know I was up all night watching it!

Connie, my summertime mulch is wood chips--can't use those in winter here as they eventually freeze together and form a layer of wood chips in ice, literally. In the winter I use fresh cut pine boughs with a generous amount of oak leafs sprinkled over them. This mix also catches and traps drifting snow. All together, this provides probably more insuluation than I actually need but better to be safe than sorry.
