Still snow covered in some places and piles of snow getting smaller. I would love to see a sign of Spring other than a single robin. Our Christmas Trees are looking like some got burned by the cold this past month. Too bad, they were beautiful before February and that miserable freezing temperature we had the whole month.

We have just a few mounds of snow left here and there--and I'm seeing shoots from the spring bulbs!! Hope it's nice enough this weekend to get out there and tackle those first weeds...

Our gardens, which are few, have mostly iris in look horrible. The neighbor's chickens have just made a mess out of them digging the leaves and picking at the bulbs. I am just sick about it. I put up with this for two years and now I am going to make sure those chickens go before the plants are completely destroyed. I love my neighbor, but he is city dweller who wants to be a farmer and has no clue what he is doing. Drives me crazy. The ground is free of frost in most gardens but it is much to cold and wet to even think of trying to do anything.

We had to move the golden vicary because we are fencing in the end of the barn so the pony we are going to board has a paddock to run in and out and the vicary is poison to horses. We did manage to move them, but otherwise it is just not possible to do anything else just now. We need more days of dry sunshine.

Many of the Christmas trees are showing signs of wind burn from those very below freezing and cold days we had in February. I hope we can bring them back before next Christmas.

JB, I think most gardens are sad things this time of year. I know mine is, the sun is out and it is so beautiful but the plants are winter burned, dead spots in the grass, all in all pretty sad looking. Things just need to dry out a bit and they will start to renew themselves.
Yes, you need to talk to the neighbor with the free ranging chickens. Or you could just make your self a pot of chicken stew? nodding

I spent the morning at a great gardening seminar. It was all about Veggie Gardening, called the Edible Landscape, He talked about using Veggies, Fruits & herbs in your flower beds, using them as ground covers & hedges. Really incorporating them into your landscape. The second talk was about garden pests.
George Weigel the speaker is well know in the area, is a garden columnist for the Hbg newspaper and much more.

I keep chickens and there might be a good reason the hens are scratching and pecking at your iris: IRIS BORERS. I had a terrible problem with these pests until my hens got in the bed and gave it a good going-over. NO MORE BORERS. They ate the eggs in the soil and in the summer they turned over some of the infested rhizomes and dug out the borers themselves. They may be doing you a favor....

If you want to keep them out of a bed, lay a piece of chicken wire OVER the bed, weighted down around the edges here and there with rocks. They won't be able to scratch and once stuff starts to grow up thru the wire, you can decide to either remove it or leave it in place. Hope this helps keep the hens out of the stew pot! Big Grin

Annie, That is a good thought about the Iris borers, but the chickens belong to the neighbor and it is their responsibility to keep them on his property. I have lived in the country for over 40 years and we have had all kinds of barn animals and pets. Sometimes they get loose, that happens, but if you have some one else's animals on your property on a regular basis then there is a problem.

We always had a farm, sheep, chickens, cats, dogs, steers, donkeys, horses, the whole thing, but we always kept our animals in their own respective stalls, and the chickens were in a chicken house with the laying boxes. I do not believe in range chickens when you have neighbors they could bother. (I know for sure now, I would never do that.)

The problem is, the neighbor built a chicken house much too small for the number of chickens he started with. The other neighbors dogs killed five or six of the first flock and he replaced them, plus a storm came and blew the chicken house on its side and the chickens had no place to go but our barn for shelter, plus my arborvitae to roost at night. It took him two weeks to get around to putting it back up and the chickens had, by that time settled in on our farm. He then realized there were over a dozen eggs in his wheelbarrow and he left them there, God knows why, and the hen hatched them. Another dozen chicks that out of those there are now 7 left...fox has eaten well and cleaned up the weaker of the flock. So, these suckers survived snow, rain, wind, ice and all that below zero temps....I am doomed unless we remove them ourselves which is what we are going to have to do. May deck I use constantly has chicken poop all over it and I need to wash it off daily. In the winter that is a problem. I love animals and birds but there is a place for all of them. They are nice chickens, but have completely ruined all the flower beds and when we had to sew grass seed, we had to lay wire on it until it was big enough. I ihad some old bulbs little blue bells we called them, but there is another name for them. They are now gone. Crocus, same thing. They have been just another annoyance in addition to the weather problems we had this year. Sorry to ramble on, just venting.
Have a good day.

JB, sounds like you been dealing with this for quite some time. We haven't had barn animals for quite some time but several years ago my son thought we needed a few chickens and gave us 3 little chicks. They were fun and we let them roam the yard they followed us around while we were doing our yard work always on the look out for any bugs or grubs we would dig up. But at the end of the day they always went back to their pen and they didn't visit the neighbors. The last of the original 3 died this fall and we sent the 6 new ones that we got just to keep her company to my son's house. We never let them run loose with us and I never got very attached to them so it was easy to send them to his place.

The rain we had yesterday is washing away the snow cover although there is still plenty left. But in places the bare ground of flower beds to be seen which is very good as I can see my spring bulbs starting to grow. I have so many bulbs so it will be a pretty spring. I am so ready for some nice weather and blooms!

The front yard has a bunch of snow crocus blooming and the rose garden has lots and lots of large flowered crocus popped up and even one or two blooms open. We should get more and more and more blooms as the days go on.

Still feels so very cold out there and even expecting snow tomorrow so winter just wants to hang on and spring does not want to arrive. Grumbling
