I LOVE fish (I'm of Scot/German/Irish descent). The ONLY fish I can't eat is shad roe and lutefisk if it's not prepared perfectly.

Yea, the Tuna Casserole..... once I made one for my roommates. All mixed made up ready to bake... got a call from a guy who wanted to go to dinner..... I put the casserole in the freezer for another day. Took it out to defrost about two weeks later... baked, tossed.... now THAT was beyond disgusting.

We all seem to be in agreement about raw broccoli. cauliflower, etc....so that's good.

Zu is right. Water chestnuts are the pits. Your comment about broccoli and cancer reminds me of when Gilda Radner did her character Rhonda Weiss...and she'd say, "I'd ratha be a skinny girl with cancer than a healthy girl with fat thighs."

Thumbs up to lemon cukes and green onions.

Why do they call RED ONIONS "red" when they're clearly PURPLE ???
Speaking of things purple, anyone like Borscht ? I love it.

I don't like beets in any form, but I'm not a big soup lover anyway, so borscht is just a compound horror.

I like most fish, but my grandmother once bought butterfish at the market and cooked it. It was disgusting. Awful texture. Like eating slices of butter, but with a fish flavor.

My Hawaiian neighbor laughs when I tell her I had tilapia for dinner because tilapia is a junk fish in Hawaii. It would be like eating smelt here.

OK, here's a potentially volatile topic:

MIRACLE WHIP vs. REAL MAYONAISE

Miracle Whip is garbage, but so is mayonnaise unless you make your own.

Years ago I thought that I'd like to end up with an old two story grey wooden house in Berkeley where old ladies and their cats could live and have huge gardens. Well, clearly I'd no longer choose Berkeley and clearly, you guys couldn't live there, cause you're all picky eaters....lol..

Isn't MIRACLE WHIP a petroleum product that subs for WHIPPED CREAM?
I'm happy to say my parents never brought Miracle Whip into our house. We had REAL everything and from scratch.

Are we talking KRAFT vs. BEST FOODS/HELLMANS ?
I will make my own Mayo (Soooooo easy and I love to flavor it) I may have tasted KRAFT Mayo ONCE and that was enough to give me nightmares.

I adore raw beets, cooked beets and Borscht.

If I am welcome with my stinky veggies, and coming goofiness, I will say I do a good job in the garden. Can we bring Gloria to cook???

JD, I wonder if poor Gilda would have agreed with that preference when she turned out to be a skinny girl with cancer. Ironic, isn't it?

Even if my near-neurotic hatred of broccoli wouldn't keep me out of the commune, I've lived alone too long, and enjoyed it too much, to ever share living quarters with anyone. I'm just as devoid of communal urges as I am of the adventure gene. I could go along with a compound, however: separate houses, shared grounds.

I'm thinking of adding on a story to my house. I liked communes. I have several old girl friends (2 in Nor Cal) who are losing their homes... with no where to go. Sometimes I think we may be better off if we brought that back into a lifestyle. Even buying an old hotel may be an idea.

I guess I somehow thought then that I could get along with everyone, but, it's true, I'm not a communal person either. Compound, yes. I would like to do a family compound..my BIL and SIL, their daughter and her kids, our son....I suppose the daughter's new husband would come with the deal, but he's a drummer, so we'd have to see about that...lol. We have room here to build, or whatever, but I think we all want to leave for somewhere else anyway. They're in Sonora now.

I love beets and have such fond memories of my German mother's Borscht! I need to make it. Love broccoli steamed lightly, cauliflower, and hated Brussel sprouts until my Mom made them while we lived with her, it was so good we had seconds. I have tasted overcooked awful ones and these were totally different, cooked right.

This is my first batch of home grown beets I picked last week. Cooked them all up and am slicing them into salads, from the lettuce we're growing. Yum!

I love beets roasted..also eggs pickled with beets. I was going to say that I love all veggies, then I thought of that kale...okay, maybe I should cook some and try it. Definitely don't like cauliflower...have to admit that I've never tried rutabagas or parsnips. I think I'll try roasting them with the beets. Seriously, a big pan of beets, onions, carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus drizzled w/ olive oil and salt and roasted, really, really good. Leave out whichever veggies you don't like....

Rutabagas and parsnips are delicious raw. I wouldn't eat them cooked, though. I'm surprised by how popular olive oil has become. I can't bear the smell of it.

I like to use coconut oil, I use it when I make brown rice and its delicious. Mishka Snow will eat bowls of it. Its also good when making popcorn.

I am going out and work for about 2 more hours then quit for the night. Gotta pay bills tonight. The wind is drying things out awful and I spent about 5 hours hand watering, that is what I will be doing for the next 2 hours.......I have sprinklers but they do not get to the root very well and every week or so i have to hand water everything.

When we do our house, someone else will be in charge of the containers, I will do the in ground stuff.

My aunt had chemo and they had a place to stay that was really cool. Everyone had their own bedroom, small eating area, bathroom and private patio that was covered and had a place to garden. Then they had what the called the great room which was really large, big kitchen, a couple of sitting areas, seperate place for tv watching and tables with puzzles, etc. It was nice but you still could be anti social if you wanted. I do want my own bedroom and bathroom and room for a couch. My aunt loved having coffee in the morning with people, then would spend most of the day in her room reading.

I had really envisioned a large house with small, private apartments. I lived in a communal set-up like that for awhile, but it didn't work out well...what can I say? It was the 60's and that's where I learned I'm not a communal person...lol..
