After 6'' of rain the other day we got a bit more last night. It all soaked in altho the lower part of town had a bit of flooding from the big rain.

It is 84 with 57% humidity this morning and heavy dark clouds....waiting for the rain!!! We sure need it!

They are calling for a high of 87F, which means it will be around 90F at my place. That's still too hot for me. I got up early and did my yard work before 6:30AM today. It's becoming where I don't like yard work. I guess I'm not much of a gardener anymore.

I don't like working in the heat, either, so I don't think that reflects on your commitment as a gardener.

In the Southeastern US we expect our summers to be hot and humid. High temperatures in the low-to-mid 90's often start in late May and continue through the middle of September. We generally get a couple of streaks of very hot weather along the way with highs breaking the 100 degree mark for a few days in a row, then returning to our typical low/mid 90's. Along with that we get a couple of cooler (?) days where the clouds roll in and it rains off and on while there is a weather system passing up the Atlantic coast or coming inland from the gulf. The thing that differentiates the months of summer is the low (again ?) temperatures. In the early summer, the low temperatures start in in mid 60's and then increases to the low 70's. In the middle of summer and on through late summer, the low temperatures increase to the mid 70's. Of course, along the way the humidity hangs in the 50-70% range. Believe it or not, there are people who have jobs that require them to work outside in the summer as well as the rest of the year!
This year (so far) has been different. The second half of June has had high temperatures in the 97-102 range almost every day. Yes, we got one two-day break with rain and clouds and temperatures in the upper 80's, but then immediately back to the sizzling temperatures. Also during this time there have been very few thunder storms and our night time lows have been in the upper 70's, and the 10-day forecast calls for more of the same.
This was a superb daylily season which had peak bloom the last week of May and the first week of June with unusually good bud counts and branching on many plants. I am a backyard hybridizer, so the first things I noticed of things declining were the number of pods that were drying up and that the only pods that were setting were those on daylilies that had morning shade regardless of me being finished with my hybridizing before 8:30AM. Now it is July 1 and I simply cannot water often enough to keep the daylilies, or much of anything else, green.
Honestly, most of my daylilies live in quite a bit of shade. Direct sun is limited to 4-6 hours per day. Regardless, the number of brown leaves increases every day. My beds looks more like late August than early July. Daylilies often have a difficult time here in the summer and some even experience summer dormancy due to our weather, but not in early July!
I am actually thinking about cutting my daylilies back like I would if I had rust - - which I don't - - just to improve how things look. Have you ever heard of anyone wishing that it was "only" 90??

It is thundering right now and we just had another brief shower. I think it amounted to around .15. This has been a fantastic early starting rainy season in Tucson!! Temp was 74 last I checked and this is the first day of July!!!!

Rain is forcasted for this evening with possible really bad thunderstorms by 11. I really want the rain but not the severe weather.

We are in the midst of a severe thunderstorm. A lightning strike hit really close to the house and scared the life out of me. The rain is slowing down now. It was heavy, but brief, about a half hour to 40 minutes.

Having a bit of internet problems after the storms came through, hoping the problem will straighten itself out. Nothing worse than trying to get anything fixed over a holiday weekend.
Still sprinkling with thunder rumbling in the valley. A big bad cell moved just south of us...there was a tornado warning with it and it was reported to be dropping 2" hail Would not have been nice just as the daylilies are getting ready to bloom, never mind what it would have done to everything else trees, vehicles, roof. Haven't looked at the water gauge but I'm thinking we have about an inch maybe a bit more so far. Before the storms it was sunny, mid 80's. Worked on the garden project early and late to beat the heat today... had to wear the blue cup hat, deer flies were terrible! There are 23 of the miserable buggers stuck to the cap tonight
Kelli, sorry to hear the heat is taking your fun out of gardening. I can sympathize with you on working in the heat, over 80f and I'm done. If you've been following the weather thread Larry we have all been talking about the strange and extreme weather this year. I just hope something changes and this is not going to be the new normal.

Today it may be the first day we get some rains after 20 days. The bad thing is that usually it rains on weekends, when my husband is at home from work and we could enjoy a motorcycle ride.

In the NW, June was coined Junuary by meteorologists, it was hotter in March than in June lol July is following suit, it's been cool and cloudy after a long period of rain. My toothy daylilies are toothless due to the cooler weather, so I've coined them "Gummies" as they're toothless.
