Mostly cloudy. SE wind 5 to 10 mph.

We've had a little over 7'' of rain in the last week and I am so glad!

But two days ago the mosquitoes just exploded! Thankfully I had pulled my beets the afternoon before and was able to wash and cut tops off outside.

This morning I went to the garage and brought in the mosquito sprays and my net suit. I tried to walk my flower beds yesterday and ended up smacking myself with my clipboard as I ran back to the house. I never got bit, but sheesh, they were nuts!

It was an exciting evening here, right here in my town we had a tornado warning. The winds were awful, the raindrops were the size of silver dollars, the noise was loud and there was a lot of lightning. I love the monsoon season and this one is starting early. Because we lost power I am not sure if anything touched down, the last report we heard was of rotating swirling motion and the weather center broadcast a tornado warning. I am so happy we received rain, it has been a long time coming!
Today the sun is shining it is 77 with 94% humidity...

It doesn't rain here on weekends or holidays. It's like the chamber of commerce made a deal with the devil or something.

They are calling for a high of 86F, which means it will be around 89F for me. That's still too hot for me but after we take our walk this morning, I probably won't be going outside anymore anyways.

We got 7 1/2 inches of rain in the past year. By some definitions, that is desert. Our grass is dying out. DH waters it for 8 minutes three times a week, which is the maximum allowed. He used to do it 30 minutes three times a week. We never had a fabulous lawn but it looked better than it does now. The grass can't fight off the weeds, either. Some people have stopped watering their yards and just have dirt with scattered weeds. There don't seem to be water limitations on non-lawns, so I still water my roses with a soaker hose for an hour once a week. They aren't blooming much right now, probably because of the heat. I don't have a lot of roses, probably twelve. Most of them came with the house. The wisteria is losing leaves already and I'm sure it's because of the drought. The citrus and other trees have been fending for themselves pretty well. The get watered with the grass. I don't know if DH gives them any supplemental water.

We had two cells pass thru, Nice rain on the first but the one came thru 10PM there was a lot, lot of rain. The garden is now well watered which is good as we really needed it.

Fortunately the nasty storms that they said might happen passed us by and there was not too much thunder and lightning.

Well , we FINALLY got some rain Thursday night . It rained from 4 in the morning until about 8 or 8:30 a.m. .... too late to do any good for the height of the daylilies unfortunately but still I thought with all the scapes out there that there would be gorgeous bunch of blooms this a.m. .....sad to say it is just...." meh! " . The colors are so muted , not at all the glorious gems they usually are after a good soaking .....so I dug down to see ......the rain penetrated all of 1/4 inch .......not enough to get down to the roots of anything . Maybe it's time to turn it all back into lawn . I know that would please my hubby .....he could then mow the lawn in the back yard with his riding mower instead of a push mower.

After all my complaining, we are getting the best rain we've had in months! Can't see across the street; lightening is flashing; thunder is rolling. Bring it on!!!! I'll shut the sprinkler system off so we don't water this evening.

Carla we heard about your tornado warning on the news here in Tucson last night. I was surprised! However, glad you finally got some rain. Tucson has had lots of rain and the monsoon started a couple weeks early here. We never got above 85 F yesterday. Unbelievable for July 1st, but such a treat! Big Grin

We dug up our lawn in front of our house during a terrible drought in the mid-90's. We put in our little lily pond and planted around the pond. I find it easier to care for than a lawn that goes yellow and dry and ugly in a drought!

We got about an inch of rain last night from the two cells that moved through. One was a nasty electrical storm, and the other was a few hours of moderate rain without the thunder and lightning. I dug up a plant under one of the pine trees and the ground is still like dust under the trees. We need a few days of continuous rain to really make a difference.

No rain predicted here until the end of the week. I think this is going to be a very dry summer unfortunately. Daylily bloom is not going to be as good this year with many scapes half their size.

A slight chance of showers between 9 am and 4 pm. Cloudy. E wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wow Carla!
Exciting indeed! Altho I hate tornadoes more each year because I have no basement...

Kelli,
I can't even imagine watering things all the time. It's a love of all things green and blooming that makes us do it tho.

Signet,
So sad to not have the rain reach the roots. So sad to have meh blooms :o(

All right Arlene!

Linda,
We are having a cool summer here. I have on pants and a flannel shirt and the doors and windows are closed. My poor tomatoes and peppers. They'll never ripen.

Valerie,
What a beautiful solution to a dying lawn!

Mayo,
Enjoy your extra rain! We were cold this last week too!

Cindy,
We didn't start spring out with much rain but my daylilies are doing exceptionally well. Many big blooms and tall!

I wore my skeeter netting out to walk the flower beds and I was surrounded! It was like walking with hungry lions all around. A bit unnerving. Two managed to get a sting in before I shrugged. Any where the netting sits on your skin, they can bite thru it. It felt good to be able to get out tho.

Have a happy 4th!

Linda I just love the monsoon season, it is such a relief to get rain....send us some more as we really need it! I am glad you are getting rain all of Arizona is in need of some!

@touchofsky I am thinking of removing grass in the back, we have to leave some because we have chihuahua's but they don't need much...I will plant something that is a heat loving plant....lantana maybe.

To all of you I hope the weather is what you wish for!

No one will be impressed by this but it is New Mexico and our average annual rainfall is twelve inches.

In the last week we have had 2.5 inches of rain, never as much as 1 inch per day! The high temperatures have been in the upper sixties and the lows have been around fifty. It's sunny this morning and the temperature is 67. We will be sitting out under the umbrella (the sun at 8,000 feet is hot regardless of the temperature.)

Daylily buds are swollen and showing lots of color, it may be fireworks in the garden tomorrow!

BUTTERED POPCORN defies timetables here, with nothing else blooming here it has twelve blooms on it today and has been blooming for two weeks. We have a second clump of BP that gets the same sun and water that has a dozen scapes but no blooms yet.

Our first Rufus arrived yesterday and suddenly it's the Battle of Britain around our feeders. We have a couple of silly Orioles who have figured out hou to get a sip from the feeders and they come crashing in every now and then. Our Lewis woodpeckers are kerfuffling over the "Peanutopia" and the Song Sparrows drown out the Brewer's Blackbirds.

Thumb of 2016-07-03/Charlemagne/04b5ae

Tiny almost invisible bits of snow still on the 13,000 foot plus mountains but that won't last. We will see snow again in October.

We were out picking weeds for supper a couple of days ago (goosefoot for Navaho spanakopita,) and a Western Meadowlark landed on top of a tall fence post very near to us and ran through her beautiful repertoire before she ducked into some tall grass. You don't see them often as they shelter on the ground in the fields around us.

And that's about it from...

Charley

Your garden is absolutely gorgeous, Charley! We actually visited Arroyo Seco last year. It is a lovely, quirky little town.
