Last bloom on Tuscawilla Tigress, still perfect at dusk tonight:

This is a bit off topic, but while I was photographing this evening, I took one of my solution for losing seeds when harvesting pods, brushing against a mature pod accidentally and losing seeds, or finding a mature pod too late with most or all of the seeds gone.

Thumb of 2016-08-16/LarryR/dad04a
This is a 3 X 5 organza bag with pull string closure. Just slip it over the pod and pull the ribbon tight. It lets light, moisture, and air in and out and keeps the seeds safely inside the bag. The bags are quite inexpensive ($1.45 for a bag of 10) and are reusable.

Two more blooms today on 'December Wedding' (something had chewed small holes in them Blinking ) and 'Winning Note' (always colorful), and one each on 'Four Eyes', 'Tuscawilla Tranquility', and 'Twist Again'. (To think that I once almost gave the entire clump of TT away, because it is "only" a (shorter) diploid! Maybe so, but it has rust resistance...)

This is the 2nd bloom in 2 days on 'Twist Again'. It's reblooming in substantial shade, which is impressive. I'm going to have to get it out of its 1 gal pot and find it some better lodgings. Whistling The problem there is that it really lights up the shade with its lovely cool lemon flowers, so I want to still keep it in shade... but maybe, for its sake, a bit less shade...

Images are from this evening:

TomThumb said:Octarine on it's first season here, still going. The color is a more of a vibrant saturated medium neutral purple in person. My camera makes it seem more red, and the throat is actually chartreuse, not yellow.
I'm really loving it's hue though. I think it lived up to the breeders description. I live in Washington though, zone 8, with very clay soil and all my purples seem to have nice coloring. I wonder if they wouldn't look as nice in warmer regions.
Thumb of 2016-08-15/TomThumb/4dda98

Octarine has struggled a bit in my climate. I am still hoping it will eventually grow better and scapes will be taller. Scapes for the past 2 years have only been about 14".

I have to admit I've never been fond of daylilies that start blooming after mid August, the lates and very lates. The last one to bloom was always Pee Wee's Big Adventure, a bud builder that starts blooming early August, it just goes on and on and on til frost...many times it was the only dayliliy with scapes still standing! By mid August I've already started trimming and cleaning the beds, moving plants, redoing beds, filling the sales row and late bloomers were always viewed as a pain...in the way and I would need to go back to the already cleaned areas and trim them after they finished blooming when I was rushing trying to finish all the other projects before winter. Plus our normally cold mornings made for extremely messy plants, blooms that wouldn't open and then wouldn't close all stuck together in a slimy mass. Within the past year or two I've come to enjoy the late bloomers more. I get to see them, really see them, without the distraction of several hundred other cultivars all blooming at the same time and the crazy busy rush of everything that comes with the main bloom season. They give me something to look forward to as I head out for those end of season garden projects. Rouen Catherdral has been a big part of my change of heart on lates, such a pretty bloom. It was a bonus plant that came with an order from the Rice's.

No new images today, we had showers off and on, so I'm going to cheat and post a few leftovers in my image file.... Smiling

Heidi is Happy, showing a bit more pink first thing in the morning before it gets warmed by the sun.

Lust Without You, settling in after being moved last fall.

Quicksilver Girl, a little spotty, it was a tough season with thirsty bugs.

Swallow Tail Kite, Lovey dubby

Tall Blonde, last fall I moved a black bugbane seedling in behind Tall Blonde thinking the two would work well together. It's always fun to work the beds in the fall putting together plant combinations while the colors are still fresh in your mind, then waiting to see them the next year.

No time for pics today, but single blooms on 'Gadsden Icicle' and the reblooming 'Beautiful Edgings' and 'Four Eyes'.

The scant bloom at the end of the season is precious, and all the more enjoyable both for its scarcity and also for not having to deadhead scores if not hundreds of blooms. As previously mentioned, though, you may have to carefully select your late (re)bloomers so they can handle the rigor of the end of the season, temperature-wise. It doesn't matter if something (re)blooms late, if the blooms can't handle cool weather and open properly.

I have 30+ hosta in my sitting/shaded garden. It is only 2 trees lol. I have daylilies in between the threebut when they all bloom together it seems less organized to me. I have purples/white blooms that are all sizes. Some scapes are short and others less sturdy. I just prefer the dl blooms to make the biggest show. It is personal preference really.
