Thank you everyone. Sharon, I was blissfully unaware of aphids for years despite their leaf damage (although I was always curious what the little white dead casings were on the older leaves). I hadn't realized the wretches were in tight at the base of the leaves.
Scapes are coming up everywhere. I have to be alert to what could be flowering or I can miss the firsts. Certainly my stingless bees don't miss them!
Vickie, I love the first times ever in the garden too. This is one. JUNE REID MEMORIAL. Quite an interesting Australian cultivar by Neville and Joan Charman who retired two years ago. It has a great edge with angel wings, owls ears and (dare I say 'chicken fat': cringe).
Flowering for the first time this season ROSE HELENA. It has large robust, interesting foliage. I thought I had lost this cultivar last year after it flowered: it just disappeared. But, eventually it sent up this huge scape. I am still worried with only having just this one scape. Hmmm, it has had something in that bud.
