I have been relabeling mine and elected to go with name only, with a (Tet) or (Dip) below the name. I used to try to fit the Genus, common name, hybridizer, introduction year. It was so much simpler to go name only and I was able to increase the font size so it was easier to read.

Good idea James. I don't hybridize so hopefully keeping that info separate is good.

James, are those stats and info on your labels the registered ones, or are those the records of how they performed in your garden?

Those are registered stats. I don't rely on them for much but I liked having more info. It's saved me a few times from crossing two way too short plants for example. The different colors for dips and tets came out of years of fruitless crossing because I had planted in my head that MIDNIGHT MYSTERY was a dip... D'Oh!

As I need to update a label (because of fading), I include the name, Tet or Dip, foliage type, scape height and bloom size. I added the height and bloom size so each year I can compare how they measure up to the registered stats. If I ever "get it together" more...I plan to add that information to the Plant Performance Report in the database.

I use the PawPaw labels (heavy duty). And the sticky labels that need to be printed on a laser printer.
Thumb of 2017-04-06/petruske/edf51d

Has anyone (using these labels) had any problems with them fading within a year?

Mine used to last at LEAST two years. But over the past year they seem to be fading much quicker. Some I replaced last fall are already faded so badly that I will need to replace them now already.

I have seen that after the season, the do fade away and even wash away in some cases. I have used clear sprays and they have lasted longer but over time, that too begins to flake away. The labels are not too expensive so I just reprint them every spring and replace as needed. But, I only have around 155 CVs. I can't imagine making labels for 1000+.

I would like to ask who has labels that last over three years? Tell us about them if you do, please.

Avery 5522 weatherproof laser labels aew what I got but only put the first ones on last winter. I'll see how long they last but so far so good. I also wrote the name on the back with lead pencil in case they fade before I get new ones made I can still identify them.

IMHO, I wouldn't waste my precious time with redoing lables every year. I hardly have time for the good stuff
I buy just the stainless steel plates and use my endless supply of silver uniform hangers cut to size. I use the short ones in the front and the taller ones in the back. Still have lots more to make. It is so much easier for those of us that need to know what's what.

I also use the Brother P-touch TZ Labels most of mine have been in use for well over eight years and are still readable not fading much if at all. One tip is to turn your labels to face north if possible to keep the sun from beating on them. A few of mine are starting to peel a little so they get replaced as needed the majority of them are not peeling. I use the see-fine steel stakes which the labels stick to very well.

I'll third on the brother labels. I have some out there that are 5 years old and look fine. I also use them in the lab where they are exposed to all sorts of stuff and they hold up surprisingly well. I would be in heaven if I could figure out the settings to have it print properly from an excel spreadsheet/database but I haven't been patient enough for that. Yet.

Lots of GOOD info in this thread........... I am just now seeing it..... but I have the ptouch labeler as well. I have had trouble with my labels peeling off and not sticking..........BUT, I am wondering if it is because I am putting them on stacks that have already been outside. A friend suggested I might have to clean each one - such as with alcohol or something - to ensure that they stick.

Need to order some more stakes and tags so I can get the new DLs labeled!!!

I went to the thrift store and bought all the old spoons I could find, took a hammer to the bowl to flatten it out then wrote on it with a paint pen. Hasn't faded a bit in 3 years. Sometimes I have to search for the spoon tho!

Just now reading this thread, so for what it's worth, I'm using the galvanized labels with a paint pen. It's only been one year and they're still lookin' good, so I'm optimistic thus far... Thumbs up My philosophy is, "Do it right the first time, or don't do it at all". Not to say it's a foolproof philosophy... Whistling Whistling nodding nodding but my pet peave is redoing things....

Early on, I read on the AHS site, that to be chosen as an official AHS display garden, the labels require the correct daylily name, spelled correctly, too, and at least the Hybridizer's name (date is optional), for non-historic cultivars in AHS display gardens. Labels for historic cultivars (in AHS approved historic display gardens) must contain all of the above, including the date. When I jump in to something, it's with both feet, so I would like to have a display garden, but it's not even close yet... Glare Shrug!

So, my OCD evil twin decided to include the stat info on the back of the labels, for my sake, since I'm a bit of a rookie daylily nut, and in 2015, there were a couple of cultivars that bloomed before or after I expected. In other words, even though I find stats interesting, my memory stinks when it comes to stats D'Oh! D'Oh! (of any kind really Sad ). Not that it's life or death, but I figured that refreshing my memory on the stats of my daylilies, when necessary, right there in the garden, might be of service later on down the road, if (and that's a huge IF) I decide to dabble in hybridizing, while I'm still on this side of the daisies Big Grin ....or more belovingly (is that even a word?? Whistling ), the daylilies.... Whistling nodding nodding
