Wild Horses and Egyptian Queen are not hardy in Boston. One Dan told me not to try so bought the other one. Died its first year.

Yabba Dabba Do is also another tender in Boston.

Be careful when you look at only someone else's zone and compare it with yours. From my experience, comparing zones is not the only factor in whether a daylily will survive.

Almost nothing here of Ra and Dan Hansen's plants survive, and I have lost over $500 of plants from Dan Trimmer. Bummer.

I only share to warn others - make sure that you have seen the plant and its habits grown in your area before spending your hard earned buckeroos!!!

Bobby is right, you can't just look at zones. My zone 8b in Florida is so different than Joy's zone 8b i Washington. Even where I was living before now, which is15 minutes down the road, is different. At my old place it gets 10 degrees colder in the winter and that's a big difference when it comes to plants.

LILLIAN'S CRAZY ARMS is semi-evergreen too. I didn't realize it, thought it was probably evergreen, but then it died back to the ground just like my dormant SPIDER MIRACLE right next to it did. But now suddenly I see that LILLIAN'S CRAZY ARMS has the most wonderful foliage about 2"-3" tall -- and SPIDER MIRACLE has a couple of little one inch green sticks so far. LCA is about an 8" cluster of thick, wonderful foliage, so healthy and pretty!

Betty, you will find that some sev will be dormant in colder climates. In the hybridizers garden it acts like a sev and that's why it is registered as such. Lillian's Sweet Thang went dormant and it's a sev. I actually have a few sev that went dormant here when we had those few days here and there that were freezing.

I have had last Snowflake for 2 years now. It has yet to bloom...hoping it will do something this year. I wanted it so badly! I bought mine on the LA from Mike Grossman...aka Northern Lights Daylilies. He may have it listed on his web site.

I cannot think of any others that I want right now. We have gotten most all of the ones that we have wanted AND MORE. Of course, if a real pretty one comes along at a price too good to pass up, I might have to get it. The only one that I can think of that I would like to get one day if the price ever comes down so it is affordable is Karol Emmerich's Gnashing Of Teeth. I also really like tall Tet. unusual forms, especially the bright colors.

I keep THINKING I am finished....

I plan on redoing the garden in front of my house that is currently filled with 40 year old overgrown evergreens. It is a south facing brick wall. That is where I plan on planting the few tender evergreens that I have purchased. Granted, my first couple of years I had no clue what EV meant!!!! I mean, I understood it meant Evergreen, just didn't comprehend the difference between dormant & evergreen when it comes to northern gardens.

I had hoped to pull those evergreens and re-landscape last season - but I lost a couple of trees in late spring, and the money I had earmarked for that went to removing those trees. I am hoping this year is better. Luckily, since those EV's are all still in pots, it's been a pretty mild winter (for my area) so far.

Also, both Yabba Dabba Do (this week) and Wild Horses (late last summer) were bought on the LA for very little amounts of money - and with Yabba Dabba Do, I already have fans coming from that seller - so minimum shipping charge. I have no problem at least trying them up here in Wisconsin. I am a lot more careful with EV, SEV & DOR when I purchase more expensive plants.

I have 4 Trimmer plants, 2 are EV (Wild Horses & Tusk) and 2 are SEV's (Sargent Major & Small Carbon Footprint) SM came from the local daylily club sale, so I know it will be OK. The other ones, it's too soon to tell. I would be sad to lose Tusk, but felt it was worth giving it a try.

I also believe that not only are the same zones, different in other areas, but I believe microclimates & soil can also contribute to some surviving some places and not others.~Jan

Enchanted April was hybridized on Long Island, where Dan lived before moving to Fl. I don't know AJ, so will look it up. Dan has a great eye. Love his eyed things that he has been releasing the last several years.

Another thing to watch for...

The state of the leaves (dormant, semi evergreen, and evergreen) have been found NOT to tell a plant's hardiness. That always troubled me. Sure seems like it should! Sticking tongue out

Ted White in Maine with his snow cover can grow many more Fl plants than can I. My land is bare many winters, like this and the freezing and thawing surely is not good for the plants.

Maybe we should start a thread for hardy evergreens!

Edit
Darn the whole AHS site seems to be stuck - down.

That's true. I know Skinwalker is listed as a dormant but the first year I grew it, it died. I replaced it and was told to mulch heavily. I did and it is fine.

This has been a really weird winter here. Spring like temps, then down to
way below freezing. The plants and birds don't know what season it is.

I have old dormants coming up with new growth that usually don't peek their
heads up till spring, and newer dormants that have not died down at all.

The EVs and Sev don't know either. So, I'm like an old mother hen checking
on the newly acquired ones last season. Pulling mulch back on warm rainy
days and putting it back on freezing ones. Usually, I just ignore all that
during the winter. Probably would be okay this season too, but as I said, old mother hen. Big Grin
