Hi, a month ago i posted about a small oak tree that needed to be cut and i wanted to propagate it. Wanted to try air layering but it would take at least month and we decided that the fruiting papaya tree next to it was a priority so i didnt get to do it. That said, i cut some the stem of a big sucker growing near the ground, ended with 4 pieces. Honestly it was a pipe dream for me because i hear propagating this kind of tree by cuttings is very hard so i forget about in a tiny bucket of water. A couple of days ago i was cleaning my backyard and notice what at the moment look like a weed growing next to the cuttings but upon closer inspection, the cuts were growing leaves.

Is this a sign that they can be planted again or just false hope, like a gecko tail moving after beign cut?

The tree for reference.

Edit: this is for the people asking if its really an oak, turns out is not, i dont know much about forums so i dont want anyone to think im ignoring by not answering but at the same time i dont wanna fill the thread with individual quoting, if there is a way to tag multiple people in a post, please let me know.

Usually oaks that are cut like that won't survive, but those 'suckers' will do just fine. Sometimes it depends on the season, or the variety of tree.

I don't think you have viable cuttings. The leaves are being grown from the stored energy in the stem but they should have grown roots before growing leaves. Have you ever had a bouquet of flowers that started growing leaves? Same thing here.

Are you sure that's an oak tree?

An experienced old gardener once told me he would rather try to root barbed wire than oak trees.

But you may as well watch for roots since the cuttings are not rotten yet.

I agree with Sue; are you sure those cuttings came from oak tree "suckers" ?

I was told that this tree is a rosy trumpet tree (Tabebuia rosea) and is also called roble de sabana or "savannah oak". Maybe is like my tropical almonds in that they are not really almonds, they are just called like that because they look similar.

That's just a nickname, it's not an oak. Quercus genus are oaks.

Botanically, it's not an oak. It's so good that you know the scientific name, that clarifies which plant we're talking about.
I had to look up Tabebuia rosea, it looks like a beautiful tropical tree. I didn't find a lot of cultural information. I don't know if your cuttings will grow, but it's worth a try. It's also supposed to be easy to grow from seed.
I don't think I've ever seen one, just on-line pictures.

Tabubeia rosea, or Tecoma pink, Bignoniaceae family - botanical name is Handroanthus Impetiginosus.
Yes, can be propagated from seeds or cuttings, either pot them up or wait until they develop roots and pot them up ( or stick in dirt). It is native to Central America and Mexico, Venezuela and Ecuador. There are many variations of the color.
Apparently the tree will drop leaves before flowering.
Yes common names do include Savannah Oak, pink poui, rosy trumpet tree, and a Hindi name of Basant Rani, common names are very misleading since I do not believe there IS a Savannah quercus, chuckl.

That is a beautiful blooming tree Lovey dubby and I can see why you would want to propagate from cuttings. Online says it can be propagated by cuttings but not sure if water rooting will work but air layering works.

What you can try on your above cuttings, is to put them in a pot with moist soil and then cover with a clear plastic bottles (as a humidity dome). If the leaves will not wilt and continue to grow inside your humidity dome that means your rooting is successful.

If you can get some IBA or NAA rooting hormone the process will be faster and more likely to succeed. Then you'll have 4 of them!

Pink Trumpet Tree (Handroanthus impetiginosum) (synonym Tabebuia impetiginosa)

and Rosy Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia rosea) which is what the OP said he has, are 2 different plants.

This is correct. Roots need to grow before or simultaneously with leaf growth to be viable.
