My 3 weeks old maidenhair fern seems to have lost its lush. It was very healthy when I got it. Now, it's strands seems to be dropping and I see some leaves turning yellow and some turning brown. I know that it's solid needs to be kept moist but still not sure how often to water. Sometimes, the pot becomes lighter the next day but the soil 1 inch beneath is still moist. I am watering after every 3 or 4 days but not sure if I am overwatering or underwatering or doing something else wrong. Some of the mature leaves strands have curled and wrinkled leaves and are drying up. Please help !

Water it. In habitat, Maidenhair Ferns grow in seeps in limestone cliffs. I would water everyday but don't let the pot sit in water. No direct sun, but bright shade.

If your Maidenhair is still in its plastic nursery pot then it will need water as soon as the surface soil feels barely damp or almost dry to the touch. Always water it thoroughly enough that some water trickles through the drain holes.

Be sure to protect it from the rays of the sun falling directly on it. It does not do well in low humidity. The leaflets are easily bruised when touched.

Got it ! I was using moisture meter to make sure it was dry all the way down the pot before watering it but maybe I should just use finger method for this one or simply water everyday if the pot feels lighter. Thanks all !

Moisture meters are not reliable and letting the soil dry deep into the pot is not good. However, watering it every day may be too much for it. Let the soil surface get almost dry before watering.

I would water it daily but, don't let it sit in standing water. Water will not hurt a Maidenhair planted in fast draining soil. They are the perfect plants for displaying near a sink: humidity and water. Humidity is less important if the soil is always moist as the plant will make its own.
