Two species that are hard to identify. It boils down to the stripes along the flanks or sides of the male.

Just a few minutes ago this little guy visited. New Mexico has other natives, but this is the only woodpecker species in my neighborhood, the Ladderback. Always looks rumpled 😅

Kind of looks like a cross between a pileated and a hairy.

I wish I had thought to take a pic of the sharp shinned hawk I saw yesterday. I was downtown at the extension office which is right next to the courthouse. The hawk came over my head at about 10 feet high, then it perched on top of a light pole on the parking lot. After surveying the area, it gave a cry and flew off.

Here is some 2022 pictures from a trip to a lake!

I've never seen a flock of pine warblers, just one or two at a time, but there was a flock outside earlier when I was working on the house. I had to stay still on the step stool because they were flying by me (one tried to land one me ).

So cool! They were in the pine straw, the crepe myrtle, the pine trees, and they were eating the suet. The male bluebird even showed up to see what the fuss was about.

That's really cool! I've seen flocks before, but not in the last three years or so. It's past time for me to put out the Niger seed; the earliest I've had goldfinches is December 26, the latest is March 20, but they come through every year.
