Sergey was a 'must have' for me when I first saw it and I'm happy to say it has grown and bloomed well. Sorry to hear it does not do well for you Tom. I wonder why? Usually, I can count on what grows for you will grow for me, but apparently not the other way around. Pity. Sad
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

I keep a "wish list" because I'm not willing to pay the premium price for a new introduction, and also because putting it on a list instead of buying immediately gives the plant lust a chance to cool. I also make sure I look it up on the irises.org wiki so I can see multiple photos of it under different growing conditions. I have found that sometimes it is actually the photo I fell in love with rather than the iris itself.

There are only a couple of irises left on my wish list that I haven't either culled from the list or ordered already. One of them is Noble Lord, which makes sense since I also really like one of its parents, Fortunate Son. I hope to buy it next year. It was out of stock everywhere I placed an order this year.

I heard the online site of the American Iris Society has started a Webinar series that is supposedly very popular. I plan to check it out. I am hoping they have things like that, like different hybridizers. If I get out there before you get a chance, I will let you know what they have.
Evelyn: Sergey is still blooming so I am still taking pictures. But yes, I will post a photo to the database of it when I get my pictures sorted. But I can tell you this, as pretty as the pictures I have seen have been, there's nothing like the real thing!!!

I have 2 new objects of desire

Thumb of 2022-06-03/LynNY/d6a7b9

Thumb of 2022-06-03/LynNY/27fd7f

Both of these are by Doug Kanarowski of Mariposa Iris

He has a different way of selling his iris. Unlike most hybridizers, who charge a premium price the year of intro and it goes down from there, he has a standard price of $65 for 2 roots of the same iris, so getting both of the objects of my desire would be $130. I would not even be thinking about this were I not obsessed.

I guess this scares other people too - as far as I know, Derylin is the only one here who has ordered these. Chinese Lantern Factory isn't even in our database.

The price of introductions is one reason that the Iris Society of MA holds an auction of new intros in early August. It helps judges & regular members try the new. & it helps growers get their plants out in commerce for judges to grow before they come to the official ballot in 2 years.

Here is a weird object of desire, an iris that does not, as far as I know, exist. It is the perfect purple, with the sky blue beards.

My camera sometimes has a mind of its own. I was trying to photograph a clump of Aristocracy. At the top right of the picture, is something resembling the actual color of Aristocracy.

Absolutely love Arizona Cave Painting that I have.
Both Chinese Lantern Factory I planted last summer did not make it. I am getting a replacement from Doug at Mariposa and will try again.I love it's look.
I think a few other members have it.I bought it because of a picture I saw from another forum member.
I got Arkenstone last year ,but it didn't bloom this year. Also have Tijuana Taxi.
I ordered Headless Horseman and None of Your Beeswax which are 22' intro's,and Baby Duck this year.

I have too many Iris, and am not too good at culling, so I'm trying to keep my lust under control these days. The only Iris I've ordered this year are possible matches for NOIDs.. There are a couple of Joe Ghio's that I've seen at his ranch.. Waiting for them to be introduced..

Yes, you were the one that inspired me to order Chinese Lantern Factory.
I only wish my 2 had lived to see bloom this year.
Maybe next.

Don't know what qualifies as perfect purple, but Magnificent Masterpiece is a very nice dark purple iris with blue beards.

@KentPfeiffer You are just the man I wanted to talk to! I looked at this, and wondered if it were crossed w/Aristocracy there might be a chance to get my fantasy iris.

MM is kind of a darker version of the fantasy iris - darker purple but the same hue, blue beards but darker than the imaginary plant. What say you? I have decided to try to make this iris but have never gotten farther than creating pods that I never planted because I didn't have enough sunny space. After my heroic efforts last summer, I now have the space to grow things out.

To my knowledge these are still unnamed seedlings.

It certainly could work, the only way to know is to try it and see what happens. Thumbs up

Couple of things to consider. I used Magnificent Masterpiece quite a bit about a decade ago when it was a recent introduction. It would set pods reasonably well, but I don't recall ever getting a decent anther from it. For what it's worth, I wasn't super impressed with any of it's seedlings.

I never grew Aristocracy so obviously can't offer much advice about it. However, it shows up in the parentage of just one registered iris. That's pretty surprising given that it's a Keith Keppel iris. If it is fertile and/or a good parent, you'd expect a lot more (Haunted Heart has 100s of descendants at this point and it was introduced a few years after Aristocracy).

It might be easier to get what you want by crossing Magnificent Masterpiece to a blue bearded light blue iris (lots of choices there). When you cross purple irises to light blue irises, you mostly get seedlings in a variety of shades of purple. Produce enough seedlings and you should get at least one that is the shade you want and retains the blue beard. One last thing, if you do get a lighter version of Magnificent Masterpiece, you might find that you lose the contrast between the beards and the petals. The seedling below came from a cross of Magnificent Masterpiece and Royal Sterling. It may look like the flower you are describing?
