Yes, that is around the size of the ones I've done. If you're going to leave them for more than a few weeks, you'll probably want a bigger vase or jug, and maybe to separate them if you have room, because they use so much water. You'll be filling that in 2-4 days. I left the leaves on mine to let the plant decide which to discard but that was kind of messy since many of them did fall off. I have no idea which is best or if it makes any difference in the long run.

The longer you leave them in water the more issues you will have with the said plant. It is best to get them into dirt as soon as the nubbies are formed. You want a healthy plant as these do carry a gene for disease.

Tiffany,

Yes, I agree. The vase was just temporary until I brought them indoors. I wasn't sure if I should cut off the leaves or not. Decided to leave just a few.

Karma,

I will take your advice. Last year I had 7 cuttings in water that rooted well and were looking really nice. However, only two survived after I placed them in soil.

I wasn't sure what happened. After placing the in soil, I transferred them from my porch to my basement which was a little warmer. I thought maybe they didn't like the change in temperature. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Best luck & let us know how it goes! : )

FWIW, I left mine in water all winter, but I'm not giving advice, just reporting that it works.

Thanks Tiffany! I appreciate and value your reports. I have one more cutting that I will keep in water as usual. Just in case. Lol

These 2 are I think retaining their leaves because there's so much sun in this spot later in the day. There are others that I haven't had time to move yet, in my kitchen leaning in the way of stuff with very little sun in the middle of the room, that have dropped most of their leaves. From other people's comments about purposely removing the leaves anyway, it doesn't sound like retaining or dropping matter much. Just making roots & staying above freezing.

Purpleinopp, the reason I strip is due to the mess and a dog that might eat what drops on the floor. Less bugs!! You will get a better plant once the nubbies form and you get the cutting in dirt.

Yep, I have been picking up a lot of leaves from the kitchen plants. We don't have any pets at the moment, except maybe a few anoles that came in with the plants. ; )

Since it worked so well in the past, and requires no additional effort on my part except to "just add water," I'm going to leave these in the water until they go in the ground in the spring. But I've never had a really sunny spot to keep them, so I'm curious to observe if that makes a difference, what kind of difference. The leaf retention could just be temporary, IDK, but I'll report what happens.

purpleinopps, please do report back. In my learning about Brugs, I have learned that the plants that are put in dirt are much healthier than those left in water. Less stress on the plant is the best route. In water they get no nutrients which the soil does proved. Best of luck.

I could only put 1 of these where it would get a decent amount of light. I'll take a pic of it soon, it's still inside.
Take more than 1 weekend to haul everything outside. I'm waiting until rain is predicted to ground more plants.

The others look like these, mostly leafless, but that's OK. All I was looking for was successful propagation without devoting any "good light spots" to the cuttings. They had filled 1/2 gallon jugs with roots, and look ready to take off to me.

This is the one that retained the most leaves. I broke the top while putting it in the ground so I stuck the top in too. It will probably just shrivel up but it has the chance if it can take root quickly.

purpleinopp, keep working on these and you will get the hang of this in no time. Since the top is damaged I would cut the top to the first limb that goes to the left as the top appears to be damaged.

Thank you very much. : )

That plant will be in more sun than any other spots where I have used this plant before. I'm excited to see if there is a noticeable difference.

purpleinopp:
In the past it was stated the lighter the bloom the more shade it will need. So what color is this one?

These days with all the new hybrids it really depends on what the cross it.

It is B. suaveolens. That's the only kind I have.

@purpleinopp it appears to be the common B. suaveolens Frost Pink that is a common one. Did it have a tag? If no tag the experts will tell you it's a sauveolen NOID. This one will take all the sun you want to give it and in certain zones can survive in the ground with some protection. I put a 5 year old plant in the ground and it came back the next year. Only to die when we had 19 inches of snow that next winter. I'm in Zone 8b and we usually have mild winters on the valley floor between two mountain ranges. But with climate change we have seen more snow than the Midwest has had this year. Our temps this past couple weeks have been 30 degrees below normal.

You might want to try putting an older plant in the ground.
