Going back to Cherry on Top...is it fragrant? I've been thinking I need to get a red. The closest I have is probably Hearthstone:

Plus a few with red falls, but yellow standards.

I'd like to get Cranapple, but not sure what TB to get. I'm sure there is a thread on favorite reds somewhere.... Rolling my eyes.

Anyone have any fragrant reds they really like?

Brad - did 12-12B get a name? If so I will make sure to add it to my tag. That one sat awhile before becoming a regular bloomer for me. Still love it.

Cherry on Top is a beauty, and you know I like the brown tones so Man Cave is right up my alley.

17-16B is a beautiful cream. Lovely form.

I am thinking that 17-16B may be the best cream to date. Definitely introduce it! I like it better than Boston Cream. The form and ruffles are perfect.

Thanks everybody I'm glad you guys like 17-16 it seems to be the total package has the form I like, good stems, and grows and increases well not quite enough stock to get serious about just yet probably a couple years out but it's on the list as a possibility in the future.

Les.. Yes it did 12-12B is now Tropical Vibes and the sib to it 12-12F is a coffee color Smiling that I think you will like called Mocha Frappe think an updated Coffee Trader both should be released next year Crossing Fingers! I haven't done a whole lot of work with Brown tones but will make some crosses next year with some more of Barrys things and see where they go starting to realize how popular they are had lots of garden visitors stop and ask about Man Cave.

Laurie.. My notes say yes Cherry On Top does have a slight fragrance ..on reds I really like Cherokee Blaze and Hearts on Fire from the Painters both are very good and I have been doing a lot of work with both of them if you can find them somewhere there definitely worth adding to the garden.. Iconic is another wonderful red and for something unique get Catch The Fever.

Tom.. Thank you will be interesting to see what you come up with combining those 2 Smiling virtually anything is possible both parents have Blyth pedigrees you could get anything .
The parent to 19-54 is different it is a sib to the one I sent you 13-49B my little white one you liked when visiting it is now called Sculpted and one I really hoped to have enough to intro this year it is a good parent and I have been using it a lot on everything Smiling very fertile and will set pods easy ..it passes on that beautiful Ghio ruffled form onto the kids in lots of different colors which is really cool and why I like it so much here are some of the favorite crosses that I have been watching closely some of these now have kids too Smiling

What Tom said - from total amazement at 19-84c to rushing out to feed horses. Brad, each one of these iris you've posted are gorgeous, but at this point, I'm noting iris that are something new - and this is something I've never seen before. Just stunning!

I normally don't follow the Iris forums, but really happy I saw this thread. All I can say is "WOW"!!

Is that what Iris beds are supposed to look like?? Don't come to my garden!!! *Blush* Hilarious!

At one point, I really went for the heavily ruffled ones. Started many years ago with Silverado. While I do still like them, I guess the larger flowers like Supreme Sultan and Titan's Glory have me looking for those huge flowers. Gonna be a LONG winter!

I've already mentioned how much I love this one. Just a brilliant iris, and one of those unique ones. Hoping all of the other factors like bud count, branching etc. will allow it to be introduced.

Here's another one that really catches my eye. Love how it seems to just have it's own heat source coming from the center of it. Nice form too.

This is a dandy orange, There aren't a lot of nice ruffled orange irises, and this one should be marketable. Really bright and great form.

Love the big powder blue tip of the beard on this one that and, the pink hafts makes it unique.

There are so many nice ones, and time to comment on all of them is limited, so I just picked the ones I'd love to order right now. Smiling

I don't care about bud count and branching, so even if C doesn't get intro'd because of those things, I'd like to have it anyway. Name suggestion: mystery cordial

I care about bud count and branching, because:

1. Low bud count means fewer blooms and a reduced span of time blooming. It may also be related to what I call reluctant bloomers.

2. I care about candelabra branching because I hate seeing blooms smooshed together so that their form becomes unrecognizeable.

If you are breeding irises, of course you can cross an otherwise pretty one to one with good brancing and bud count to get possibly what you want. But if you live on a postage-stamp property you need to pay attention to all characteristics so that you get a good landscaping effect.

Of course I understand that one would be concerned about those things when introducing an iris. My point is that I love that iris so much, and I would be so sad if I couldn't have it in my garden because it fails in those criteria and is not introduced. Even if it is not introduced, and is just an also ran seedling, it is welcome on my postage stamp property because it is one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen. If I can see that flower, I will be happy.

If one is a serious hybridizer, you need to be conscious of the criteria for quality irises. If you become known for registering and distributing irises that don't meet the standards, you will soon be out of business.
