Dave, I really love the historic information with many of the seeds at Victory - and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way! Thumbs up

Does anybody in the tomato seed swap happen to have bee balm seeds? JBarstool is looking for some.

A lot of seed companies don't ship internationally -- JBarstool is in France. :-)

I had spotted beebalm some years back... nice, but a bit of a thug for me.

Antsinmypants!!! Girl, you just went to town adding seeds to the tradelist! And I just went to town putting stars next to them for future dibsing. (dibsing?? hmm)

Hey Y'all; Happy New Year! I tip my hat to you.

Sorry I couldn't get everything done in time to participate in the swap. Most of my seeds are on the older side, anyway. Hope you're all havin' fun! nodding

My current harvest for this week, Lemon Boys, Juliet and Dwarf Johnson's Cherry. I knocked a couple of green ones off, trying to get to the ripe ones in the cage of Lemon Boy.

For those of you swapping, I'm highly recommending Lemon Boy, as this is the first time I've grown them, and they're delicious, beautiful and productive.

My hubs is out of town so I'm going to be eating tomatoes on everything this week!

I see ONE packet of 'Lemon Boy' in the swap. antsinmypants says it seems to grow true from seed despite (I think) being a hybrid.

New to growing tomatoes here! Can i get some tips on keeping them alive and well? Just got a light freeze here in Phoenix, Az! I worry for my tomatoes because I forgot to cover them and the leaves look dead but the fruits are reddish-green.

Welcome! to the site, @younggardengrower! I'm no tomato expert, but you can bet this thread has the most tomato-growing knowledge all clustered together in one place more than anywhere else on the internet. The tomato growers on here constantly blow me away with how successful and knowledgeable they are.

As for me, I was thinking that we were going to have a warmer winter, and thus I was going to start my seeds earlier, but looks like I might think again on that:

I get E-mails from several seed companies, including Victory, but this time of year, at least 4 months from planting, I zap most of them.

It has been a long, long time since I deliberately planted tomato seed but reading this just may put a burr under my saddle that has to be dealt with. I tip my hat to you.

Welcome! to you @younggardengrower I think your tomato plants are most likely dead, even though the fruits didn't freeze. They won't ripen now that the leaves are dead - the leaves are what 'collects' the sun for the plant and makes the sugars that go into the fruit. So you should harvest your tomatoes now, and start some more seeds right away. Then put an alarm or reminder on your phone to tell you when it's going to get too cold at night for your tomato plants, and that way you'll remember to throw a blankie on them for the nights. Don't use plastic, use something made of fabric and tent it with the edges weighted down, so that it will trap the heat coming up from the warm ground.

As far as hybrid seeds coming true, once the hybrid is stable, (before it is released for sale, usually) it may produce new plants from seed that are true to the breed. But it may not. We did have a discussion about cross-pollination of tomatoes a few months ago, and *as I recall* Dave told us that the cherry types are more promiscuous than large-fruited tomatoes, so they will cross with other plants easily. But the large-fruited ones don't get crossed so often.

Glad I harvested tomatoes yesterday, my garden is a bit of a mess today from all the high winds we had. Happily, the front went racing by in about 20 minutes, dropped an inch or so of rain, and didn't cause any tornadoes here. Phew! Cool, sunny and beautiful today, more rain expected on the weekend.

It's the opposite, actually. Larger fruiting varieties tend to have larger flowers which make them more susceptible to crossing by pollinators.

I didn't know that, and I just placed my order yesterday. Crying But as my husband says, "It's ok, the profits are going to a good cause". I just checked and so far in the tomato seed swap, I have won 8 packages of seeds from Dave, so that's a pretty big discount! Hurray!
