Oh, yuck! I think "just like something one would get at the grocery store in mid-winter" is a great description!

Got a ripe sky reacher tomato here. It's a pretty little thing. Small, maybe a bit bigger than a golf ball. And it cracked, though there has been a lot of rain lately. It seemed to be more gel and seeds than the other tomatoes I've picked so far. The plant is still pretty healthy, even being next to the blight prone yellow pear tomato. LOTS of tomatoes on the plant but they are small and taking their sweet time at getting ripe.

The taste was a little 'deeper' than any tomato I'm used to. I feel I'll be better able to comment on taste after having had more garden tomatoes. It didn't knock my socks off or anything. My daughter tried it and she rolled her eyes at me and said "It tastes like a tomato." She did say the golden accordion was more 'sour'.

Some tomatoes just don't have a flavor that there is anything remarkable about. Don't mean they don't taste good, just common tomato flavor.

Very nice looking tomatoes!! Not a variety I had heard of before this so I had to look them up.

I see the seed offered at Territorial Seeds. And they really make it sound superb.

Thanks Claudia, they are good but the pic doesn't capture how big they are. They are quite large actually.

I'm making tomato paste today so while out getting supplies, I bought a kitchen scale. Here's one of the sky reacher tomatoes:

And one of the bigger sweet salad tomatoes:

I weighed all my sweet salad tomatoes for the paste:
Thumb of 2016-09-03/robynanne/68e1e6

We'll see how much I end up getting in the end. I've cooked it and put it through the food mill and it is just boiling down now. I added some herbs, peppers and garlic. Just sampled a spoonful and oh wow, that is good!
Thumb of 2016-09-03/robynanne/765209

Can the left over pulp be tossed in the compost even though it is tomato and seeds and all?

I toss rotten tomatoes and tomato peelings and tomato cores in the compost all the time. The worst that happens is that some volunteer plants might come up next season. Hilarious!

But then volunteer tomato plants end up coming up here and there all over the garden anyway from dropped tomatoes that rot.

It is nice to have a scale to be able to weigh the tomatoes. I rarely weigh mine, only the big ones that I am curious the weight of.

Hurray for home made sauce. Big Grin Big Grin

Thanks!

Yep, it all processed down to four 4 ounce jars of paste. Crazy! Super good though. There were two ounces left over so I just put them in a cup with some cheese. Yum!

A Determinate type. This plant proved to be extremely disease resistant and produced a very large crop of tomatoes. Fruit was very uniform in shape and was very much blemish free. Fruit size ran from around 8-12 oz. for me. I had purchased these as seedlings at a local farm stand in the spring. From what I have read about them (which has not been very much, to be honest) they are mainly meant as a commercial crop tomato for market. I tend to believe that, as my one gripe with these was taste. They were not bad, not by any means, but they were just ok. Nothing special in my eyes. Personally, I'm not likely to grow again but I would certainly recommend to anyone with blight concerns.

The Country Taste have proven to be a winner here. My first year growing them but these will be back next season for sure. A nice steady supply of nice sized absolutely perfect looking tomatoes. Plus they taste nice. Not devine like the taste of some heirlooms here ( Cowlick Bradywine, Purple Dog Creek, Royal Hillbilly and the OP La Vie En Rose) but the taste is very nice and no complaints. So all around a really nice tomato.

Has anyone tried Legend tomatoes? I just received some from an order, have to check whether it's hybrid or open pollinated. Main attraction for me is it can handle heat and is blight resistant.

Tatania says this, but I did not see either "OP" or "F1". Doesn't Dr. Bagget mostly develop OP varieties?

Compact, mid-season, semi-determinate or determinate, regular leaf, commercial variety,
"Very good late blight resistance",
"Developed by Dr. James Baggett at Oregon State University."
http://tatianastomatobase.com/...

Victory Seeds sells Legend, so it must be OP.

Victory has a link to a great article about 'Legend', written when it was first introduced:
